We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Kamena and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dave, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was 28 years old and spending a lot of time on the beach surfing and playing volleyball. One of my surfer friends owned a clothing brand and i worked nights for him sometimes cutting fabric into pattern pieces. I saw an opening in the beach volleyball market for surf style shorts so I made some.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Running a business is a lot like playing a sport at a high level. There is a lot of behind the scenes practice. There are tons of mistakes. You need to choose your level and competition wisely and success can seem to take forever… with wins few and far between at times. The most important trait in life and business is to just keep going, keep moving forward with new ideas and strategies. I enjoy living like that and its given me a lot of success and happiness.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live in Ensenada which is is Baja, Mexico but I was a San Diego local for many years. A perfect day in SD for Dave Kamena starts with an early surf at Sunset Cliffs and a round of Disc Golf at Morley field right after a post surf bean and cheese burrito from whatever-bertos. A bike ride from La Jolla to South mission beach to play some beach volleyball with some of my old friends would be capped off with an all expense paid trip to the gaslamp for dinner and drinks. Who pays? Whoever won in Volleyball!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
