We had the good fortune of connecting with Curt Cuscino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Curt, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would say that EVOLUTION — the ability to change, adapt, and evolve quickly — is the most important factor behind my, and rather, my agency’s success. Just like the many startup businesses and challenger brands we here at HypeLife Brands work with daily as a specialized startup marketing agency, EVOLUTION is an important ingredient to succeeding, especially in today’s market and climate. With technology being a key factor in how and where to grow, understanding how to grow and adapt quickly and nimbly is absolutely critical in surviving, growing, and thriving regardless of what’s going on in the market at large. We here at my uniquely-positioned, hybrid venture-studio-meets-marketing-agency, HypeLife Brands, are a key player in all of our clients’ successes and help them navigate the ever-changing world quickly and efficiently.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the Founder & CEO of HypeLife Brands, a progressive brand development + startup marketing agency specializing in helping lifestyle startups & brands powerfully engage the Millennial Generation. I am extremely proud that we are near our 20-year anniversary, and that something I created something — just like the startups businesses we predominantly work with — from the seed of an Idea. A very wise mentor of mine once taught me that your business is not the end of you, rather, it is a vehicle for getting where you want to go, and I can definitely say that I’ve embraced that as a part of my personal journey. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have met my beautiful wife Olivia, and have the two beautiful, little boys that I’m blessed with today. It is inspiring to think of my journey thus far, and the decisions I’ve made to get where I — and my team — continue to blaze a trail to. Success is relative, and I encourage all our startup founder clients to embrace that idea fully. It’s not just about money or profits, it’s about the freedom to create your own (ad)venture, and the inspiration that breeds…again, success is relative, and I fully believe in refusing to settle for the status quo. While it is certainly a high-risk concept to start your own business, you don’t know what’s the on the other side until you embrace and commit to the Journey. And I myself have done just that, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Was it easy? No, not at all. It never is. But that again, is part of the journey…which I fully believe in. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Forge a path, and leave a trail behind you.” That’s what building a successful startup is all about, and I’ve been able to do just that, and love helping our clients do the same.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow, that’s a tough question! Got a few days? Haha! I would be happy to orchestrate a tour of our “island” here in beautiful Oceanside, California 🙂 Our journey would start at our office here, just a few blocks from the beach. Then we’d stop off for drinks and food at one my favorite local craft distilleries, Pacific Coast Spirits. After you’ve tasted their amazing craft cocktails and food fare, perhaps we’d venture down to the Modern Times brewery + tasting room in Encinitas, and grab a beer there, or head to Jalisco Cantina here right by our office for mezcal-flavored inspirations. Then we could grab a beer over at the Stone Brewery tasting room, and then walk down to the Oceanside Strand, or the Oceanside Pier and take in the edge of the earth. Catching the theme?! Yes, I admit, I’m a typical elder-Millennial, and love my libations and food experiences. Closet foodie? Maybe. How’s that sound to you? If you’ve got more time, we could venture up to Los Angeles, and I could show you around where I spent a solid 7 years…a place I’m so proud of, and consider my true home and stomping grounds.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to give a much-deserved shoutout to my father, Tom Cuscino, who instilled in me the many characteristics that I aim to instill in my two young boys (Luca and Nico): Hard Work, Focus, Dedication, and what a truly finished “job” looks like…he taught me that *anything* but half-stepping was what it really means to do something right, and do it well. And that’s the forever-pursuit I’m always after, as both a Leader, but also a constant student of our field, and culture at large.
