We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Canole and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christopher, how do you think about risk?
Even though I had a successful career as a earth art sculptor including being New York City’s first Artist-in-Residence in the 70’s, I was seduced by Hollywood in front of and behind the camera for decades. On a sunny morning at the Pannikin Coffee House in La Jolla I decided to explore two dimensional art for the first time by drawing a postcard filled with images of fellow San Diegans. I printed up thousands of cards and handed them out free. Many cards reached people I never expected to meet or be hired to draw personal portraits including Barack Obama, Pope Francis, Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, International Olympic Committee and The Stan Lee Foundation. Most of my artistic time now is split between my drawings and appearing as Dude Vader at charity events

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My daily challenge is to create an image to inspire people or appear as my Star Wars Steampunk Samurai character Dude Vader at charity events. I am most proud of representing the United States at International exhibits and visiting hospitals as Dude Vader to lift the sports of children of all ages. Being an artist daily is no easier or harder than being a human. Once it is in your blood it is the natural way of your life. I live by challenges especially when someone asks me to volunteer. I live my the motto “Just Do It” by saying “Yes” when someone presents my a new opportunity to explore an art form I’ve never attempted before. I am satisfied the world knows the charity character Dude Vader more than be because he is a metaphor of Hope.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to a charity event for kids especially if they have never volunteered before. As I often tell friends in costume, “How many times in your life can you transform from playing a Super Hero into Being a Superhero?”

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to all cosplayers who appear at charity events
