We had the good fortune of connecting with Christine N and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christine, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Determination, pushing forward, and striving for improvement has helped me get to where I am today. There are so many factors and distractions that can help or slow down one’s success, so I believe that having determination and motivation in what I want to pursue will help me succeed. I started off with 16 subscribers on YouTube which I am very grateful for and I fully enjoyed creating videos because I liked having that creative outlet and to create for those who enjoyed watching my content. I did not start my YouTube journey until quarantine started because I was shy and I still am pretty shy, even if it is just me and the camera in an empty room. I was also worried about other people’s thoughts when I first started my YouTube channel such as making videos are weird or why am I doing this without an audience. Despite outside opinions, I continued to develop and add more content to my social media accounts and YouTube because it is something I genuinely enjoy. It is easy to be discouraged and quit at times, especially when looking at analytics or not being satisfied with what I created, but I just have to keep on creating in order to improve my content and to succeed in what I want to pursue. There would be no success without failure, so do not get discouraged with your dreams and where you would like to be in the future. We have to start somewhere in order to succeed, so keep on believing in yourself and you will get to where you need to be.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think my greatest accomplishment was starting my YouTube channel and staying committed to my posting schedule for the past two years. I currently create lifestyle content on my YouTube channel! It has not been easy, there have been a lot of ups and downs. I struggled with my video content quality because I was unfamiliar with editing and video programs such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Splice. I played around with different video programs to see which one was best for me and set aside some time each day to watch editing tutorials on YouTube. Sometimes I am faced with a creative block, so being able to maneuver my way out of it can be a bit of a challenge, so I tend to set aside some time to get some air and jot down new video ideas that come up unexpectedly. I feel like what sets me apart from others is that I genuinely enjoy creating content and hopefully, that translates in my videos. I also learned how to start and build my channel on my own. I majored in chemistry, so transitioning from studying the periodic table to learning video editing was quite a challenge. I remember when I first started YouTube, I told myself that I would upload at least twice a week, but as time progressed, I have experienced really bad burnout. During this burnout period, I just put together videos even though I was not proud of them just to keep up with my posting schedule. I have learned that it is okay to take a break every once in a while and to believe in your craft. I am my biggest hater and I have many off days, so sometimes I just feel like deleting some of my videos because I do not like the content or how I edited it, comparing myself and my content to other people, or I just feel like my channel and I are not successful. Despite these days, I always believe in what I create and keep pushing in my craft because I truly enjoy it and in the future, I hope to look back and see how much I have grown and be happy with where I am.
When I first started my YouTube, I did not expect it to grow as much as it did. It was a place for me to express myself and create content based on my personal interests, as well as a place for those who enjoyed watching my videos. When it comes to my story, I would like my viewers to know that when you are feeling down or happy, my videos are a comfort for you. I also want to say that if you have a dream to start something such as YouTube or anything else, keep striving for it because it will all be worth it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I drink boba everyday, so the first stop would be to get boba! I am still on the search for my favorite boba shop in SoCal, but so far my top contenders are Latea in Culver City or Kawaii in Fullerton. We would then go to Manhattan Beach to take a stroll along The Strand to enjoy the views and share some gelato together. Ever since I first stepped onto Manhattan Beach, it has been my favorite beach. Parking is unfortunately not free, but the views are worth it and the walk along the strand is so calming. I feel so relaxed and all my worries go away when going here, it is like magic! You will also get really cute and aesthetic pictures and videos here for your instagram, especially at sunset! They also have a free aquarium at the end of the pier, so I would recommend visiting it when you get a chance! I would then take my best friend to The Grove or Americana or both to get some shopping in and then go play in an escape room. It is not my itinerary without at least one escape room, I feel like I did more than 30 in my lifetime. I like scary escape rooms because they are so funny when I play them with my friends, even though it is scary at the same time. We would then end the day with another boba shop on the way to kbbq for dinner. My favorite kbbq place is Grams in Garden Grove because of their galbi or what I like to call bones and their mash potatoes, which is one of their side dishes. I go through like eight side dishes of the mash potatoes because that is just how good it is. I do not know if I go there more for their kbbq or their mashed potatoes. That would be a day in my life if my best friend was visiting me in town!
There are so many places to explore in SoCal and for each day, I would want to take my best friend to aesthetic places in different cities for insta pics. For at least one day in the week, we would definitely take a drive along the PCH and stop by Malibu to go to the Getty Villa for pictures, and then explore Malibu’s beaches and gift shops. The next day, we would go to SeaWorld to go on a behind the scenes penguin tour to visit my favorite animals and see all the other animal exhibits they have. I would also want to visit Little Tokyo with my best friend to get some good eats in, try new boba shops, and explore around since I have not really ventured out there yet. This is a little insight of where I would want to go with my best friend for the week!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that have supported and believed in me since the beginning and I would not be here without them, so thank you to everyone that has wished me success. Growing up, my mom has supported me with everything that I set my mind to, despite the outcome and to keep pushing forward in order to find my definition of success. I would like to say thank you to my dad, sister, aunt, my godmother, Pam, and God because they support me with everything that I want to pursue. I would also like to say thank you to William who has encouraged me to start my YouTube channel when I brought up the idea and has given me tutorials on how to edit videos when I first started. My best friends: Jaiza, Kara, Robert, Carol, and Cindy have supported me throughout my journey. I am always so excited to tell them about new opportunities that come up such as this magazine interview. This is such a dream. It still does not feel real. Thank you and I appreciate you for having me for this interview, Shoutout SoCal. Thank you so much to my subscribers for watching my videos, I would not be here without you and I am forever grateful for your support; I am always supporting you with your dreams as well!
