We had the good fortune of connecting with Britney Berkstresser and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Britney, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I created a few “Tiny Holds” entirely for my self and my sister because we found so much joy, healing power, and love in our new-found sport of Indoor rock climbing. We looked online for a while and never found any type of miniature rock climbing hold accessories so I made us some! I started making Tiny Holds for my gym friends and word quickly spread. Everyone loved them! They seemed to be good luck charms that brought so much love and joy! Before I knew it I was asked to sell at an event at my local gym Sender One. After suffering through an illness and losing everything I knew I needed to create the exact life I wanted to live . I wanted to create a life where I could heal, work, grow, and play all on my own time. I was ready to be a full-time Girl Boss and take on the world! Tiny Holds went full time! I wanted everyone to experience the love and excitement of having their very own Tiny Hold with them at all times. Not only did I want to create cool accessories out of my art… I wanted to make sure Tiny Holds would contribute to being a positive, healing, and uplifting space for the indoor and outdoor climbing community.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My artwork is very unique… I hand sculpt miniature rock climbing holds. The holds I create are not actual holds they are my artistic interpretation of how I think a really awesome hold should look! I love using bright colors and unique color combinations so they really stand out. No hold I make is the same they kind of just organically come out of my head as I’m working. I got to where I am at now by sheer determination hard work and no joke working 24/7 for a hot minute! It was not an easy task. Balancing an illness, another job at one time, life and just about everything else I would put in every ounce of effort I had to get myself to where I am now. I wouldn’t change a thing! At times I had to set aside everything even my one true love of getting outside to climb and relax but knew it would be worth it. I learned so many lessons of what my needs are as a human and what my business needs are and how to balance them. One of my biggest lessons through what I have learned so far is that keeping a positive mind, healthy body and by surrounding myself with people who believe in me has been the strongest medicine for my business. I want the world to know there is always hope even when someone tells you there is not no matter what it is. There is always a will a way and people around you who are on your side who will help your succeed heal and grow. I am living proof and I want my story and my brand to have a positive impact on people’s lives to help keep them in a positive mindset and space. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A nature girl living in orange county can get a bit tricky but I definitely have my favorite secret spots that make me and my friends feel like we’re living in a mountain town. Peters Canyon and Carbon Canyon I just love roaming around there in the evenings. Carbon Canyon has a Tiny redwood forest that’s defiantly worth checking out. Peters Canyon is classic for me I grew up running around that place. I love a good park to relax or slackline in … One of my favorites is Bent Tree Park. One of my favorite places to eat would be Blue Agave. The pork plantain nachos are more than to die for sounds like a funny combo but nothing beats it. Another classic for me I am a huge kombucha fan and you can find me at Zama tea and Kombucha in Tustin tasting every single flavor on earth. I’ll drive anywhere to taste a kombucha on tap! I love checking out any type of rock or crystal store too this girl just loves rocks!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out goes to Taylor Carpenter from Static Climbing! https://www.staticclimbing.com/ She’s an amazing human that does so much for the outdoor community and now the medical community too! She’s been my right-hand girl and is always there for me when I need her. Shes helped me endless business questions and introduced me to so many amazing uplifting people who have helped my business grow.
