We had the good fortune of connecting with Biriz Karli – Alemdar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Biriz, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I created What Did Biriz Do? for artists/art related organizations to be able to get their work/message out to the audience they have in mind. Working artists know that marketing/PR takes almost half of their time, which they would rather use in their creative process. Within this process the goal is to establish connections that would flourish into future collaborations.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was born in Turkey and lived my live in many different continents before calling San Diego my home. I have a degree in Archeological Artifact Conservation/Restoration and took part in many archeological excavations in Anatolia (Turkey), as part of my tenure for the University of Ankara (Turkey). Although I have had a chance to work with many different materials (glass, ceramics, organic materials), I have found my passion in restoring mural paintings and was lucky enough to be part of a team that worked on the restoration of mural painting in Cappadocia (Nevsehir – Turkey).
As life would have it, I also had the opportunity to start my own PR/Research company at a later date in Istanbul before life had other plans and met my husband and found myself living in California (San Diego) and starting another kind of adventure: Parenting.
Through the many lives that I’ve had the pleasure of living, I never strayed far away from some kind of art connection. Whether be in photography, painting or sculpting I have used the creative process to deal with life in general. As years passed by I have discovered the amazing world of digital art making and have been a great advocate for all digital artists.
I founded my company, What Did Biriz Do?, as a mean to offer PR/Marketing solutions for local artists and non-profit art related organizations. The idea is that artist should spend their time creating and leave the boring/tedious process of getting your art out into the world to enthusiasts like me.
I have had the amazing opportunity to work with Studio ACE, a non profit in art education, in launching succesfully their annual Valley Art Festival that celebrates The San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians (a Luiseño Tribe of Oceanside, CA). This project reflects all aspect of what WDBD was able to achieve, from digital design elements to press releases and social media marketing. We are now currently working on the 2nd annual Valley Festival that will take place in November 2022.
As with all endeavors in life nothing is without challenges. I have learned to appreciate all hurdles and learn from my experiences. I love being part of the local artist community as a creator myself, and also an entity that helps fellow art community members.
I still produce art (Photography, mixed media, paintings, sculptures) passionately and share them in select exhibitions around the San Diego Area.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, this is San Diego! You have a lot to pick from. Being part of North County I would definitely encourage people to explore the north county beaches. My favorite: The dog beach in Delmar. But I am biased since I am in love with my rescue pup, DeeDee! And South Ponto Beach (by the Alila Hotel)
