We had the good fortune of connecting with Billy Hassan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Billy, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
This is a question my former colleagues or friends/family ask quite a lot. I think the most important lesson that I’ve learned is persistence is key. Every business has hurdles/challenges, but being persistent in your goals is truly one of the best ways to grow your business (or even yourself as a person).

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At King Oil & Co. our goal is to bring you an incredibly versatile spicy condiment. When talking to our customers we always tell them that our condiments arent meant to blow steam out of your ears, they’re meant to add a new exotic flavor to your meals. We believe what sets us apart is our attention to detail within our recipe. Good ingredients and consistency are two values we truly believe in. Were very proud of our ingredient selection and our dedication to making sure you reciece the best possible product we can provide.

Just like any other business, starting out is never easy. Especially in a small business, there’s always some kind of challenge or hurdle to get over. But its also very rewarding overcoming those challenges, and growth follows once you overcome them. There are a ton of lessons to be learned from running a small business as well. Simple things like hard work and patience will always show in your product.

I would love for everyone to try a bottle of our Chili Oil or our Hot Honey. Youll peak in to a whole world of condiments that you can enjoy with anymeal at anytime. Our brand is here to bring you a delicious treat for you to enjoy and share, and as long as were here will never stop that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is a true experience that’s unique in its own way. When my friends come to visit I always have an adventure around town planned for them. It goes something like this…

First, we have a bite at The Friendly. This should be at the top of every “top foods in San Diego” list, this place covers everything. The food, the environment, and the staff are all incredible. Then walk it off in La Jolla right by the cove, a gorgeous spot straight out of a movie. Then when it comes to the night time activities, will usually grab wine at some fo the natural wine bars in town. Some of our favorite local natural wine is Los Pilares La Donna.

Will usually stick with wine for the rest of the week, but the places we choose to eat will differ. Another local favorite is City Tacos, the craft tacos are some of the best in California. With non traditional flavors and toppings that are always a treat.

A few honorable mentions would be: Hodad’s, Luigi’s Pizzeria, Cesarnina, Las Cuatro Milpas, and Tajima Ramen.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Behind every business or brand is a great story, that’s what makes it so special, For me personally, there’s always one source of motivation that helps me get through any scenario. About 6 years ago I read Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers. I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read it, but the stories and lessons in that book are very inspirational. A true

Besides Outliers, my biggest motivation is my dad. Most kids when they’re young will say “my dad’s a superhero”, I still feel the same way as an adult about him.
