We had the good fortune of connecting with Anne Woods and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anne, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote right now is “Every failure brings with it the seed of an equivalent success” from Napoleon Hill. Ever since the first time I heard this quote, it has struck a chord deep within me. It combines so much I think is essential to entrepreneurship and life – hope, optimism, learning from your mistakes, wisdom, facing challenges, and continuing to get up day after day with strength. It also permeates and supports the essence of growth… of planting the seeds of what you will nurture and foster, and one day sow.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
It wasn’t until my very late 20s that I took my first full time job, and in accounting no less. I’ve always been a bit of a nomad/hippie/entrepreneur mix, and was also into acting for much of my teens and 20s, so full time employment always felt like a hinderance to the life I wanted to live. Life so often gives us what we need to become the person we want to be, or live the life we want… we need to be challenged and grow from those challenges to up-level. Even though I was miserable most of the time doing full time accounting, it has been absolutely crucial to my success with my business But First Crystals. I did accounting for a couple different companies before starting my business, most notably Impact Theory. I left Impact Theory in early March 2020 (cue the dramatic music) even though I could have stayed employed when the global pandemic began. I knew I wasn’t on the right path and had been feeling off center for a long time, even at an amazing company like Tom Bilyeu’s. So I quit my job, and started my online crystal business shortly thereafter. I’ve always been drawn to crystals and saw how much fun other people seemed to be having online selling crystals on Instagram Live Sales especially. I did a whole lot of research, and sold my first crystal in May 2020. I quickly realized how beautiful the online crystal community is. Everyone is so supportive, wants to get to know each other in a genuine way, and the whole community is all about sharing good vibes – definitely a bullseye for a hippie like me. I was initially excited to just share crystals and knowledge about each of their metaphysical properties, but as my community grows on Instagram, I have realized it is so much more than that for all of us. We get to come together a couple times a week on IG Lives, and chat and laugh and connect…. truly, this is the most deeply fulfilling business I have ever created or been a part of. I’m really grateful every single day to be connected with such amazing people all over the world, and to impact people every day – even if it’s just inspiring a smile when I tell silly jokes on IG Lives. I don’t think I fully understood the value of community before starting this business, and especially that an online community could be so tight-knit. I’m super excited to keep growing But First Crystals, connecting with more crystal-lovers around the world, and truly making a positive impact in people’s lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have so many favorite spots in Los Angeles! First off, we would definitely go hiking at Temescal Canyon in the Santa Monica mountain range – at the peak, there are gorgeous views of the coast, downtown Los Angeles, and you can see for miles and miles. I would also bring them to one of the many restaurants on the beach; it could be Duke’s Malibu, Moonshadows, Gladstone’s, or up the coast a little to Paradise Cove. I’m a total foodie, so I would want to bring someone to other delicious restaurants like Takami in DTLA, Fritto Misto in Santa Monica, or a local spot near me in Culver City – Cafe Vida for a good brunch, and the hidden Seventy 7 Lounge for an afternoon drink. We would do a few touristy things like go to Rodeo Drive, drive through Hollywood to see the sign and the Walk of Fame, and I would bring them through the winding roads of Mulholland Drive to see all the beautiful mansions and views from above. Of course, there would be at least one full beach day, ending it with a bonfire at Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey, the only beach in LA that has fire pits (at least, before Covid).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate this ShoutOut to Kathrin Zenkina at Manifestation Babe. I have been listening to her podcast for a few years now, and following her journey. She has been really a driving force in terms of my mindset not only with money (which is a big focus of her journey and programs), but looking inside of myself and asking myself if my stories are truly serving me on my life’s path.
