We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Beltran and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Ever since 2020 started the word “Balance” has been a huge part of my growth, happiness and the way I choose to conduct my life. As we began to work from home I was kind of excited, I essentially was never unplugging working until 11:30 PM so I could try and be in bed my Midnight. This new normal felt like I was accomplishing so much, Im sure you can guess what came next – Burnouts, A nasty twitch in my right eye, headaches, and bulking season came early. I needed to find Balance, This took an investment in my time management & discipline to do whats right for me! I categorized what balanced looked like for me. : Mental Health, Daily Tasks, Fitness , Future goals & Chill T.F. out. In that order! Each one of these allowed me to maintain a high level of Productive while making sure my body was properly fueled to sustain through the marathon. Mental Health : I use the calm app every morning before I get out of bed or I go for a quick walk to stretch my legs, meditate & set intention for the day. Daily Tasks: We all have a business run, team to manage & calendar meetings to attend. I try to make sure these are finished by 2 pm. I then set a to-do list for tomorrow for anything not pressing. Fitness & Nutrition : Depending on time I try to get out of house by 5 to workout, run & workout my body. I need to get out the daily anxt. and to be honest some of my best ideas come our when I’m running. Though-out the day I am eating Organic, plant based foods. I use Enso Superfoods to make sure my body is replenished with the nutrition I need. Business owners know, our Gut is our second brain. We need to make sure its cleansed and healthy to make good decisions. Future Goals : I have goals for my current business & personal goals Ive set my sights on. If our company is in a good position & everyone is aligned I look forward to future skills I want to learn and dedicate an hour a day to studying. Chill Time : I don’t want to program myself with too many zombie movies but every now & again it’s alright. I enjoy writing, planning & reflecting on how the past few months have gone
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Original Grain creates timepieces that tell a unique story. Each watch holds a piece of history through the materials used. Such as reclaimed Whiskey or craft beer barrels. Wood taken from Yankee Stadium, Golden State Warriors or stained with wine. For each watch sold we make a sustainable contribution by planting trees with One tree planted. We have planted over 500k trees to date. I started this brand with my brother Ryan while I was still serving in the Marine Corps. We originally launched via Kickstarter raising over 800K on two campaigns. This system helped form our business model and grow our brand through Direct to Consumer marketing. Lessons learned have been to enjoy the ride & rollercoasters of emotion that come with lack of experience. Each time Im overwhelmed I usually learning something new & adding new skills to the tool bag. Its been important for me to remember why we got into this in the first place & where I was 8 years ago. The growth has been amazing, business isn’t always easy alot of companies have come & gone during this time. Im thankful to still be running a profitable business during a challenging period in our history.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Pre-Covid im taking my friends to enjoy all that San Diego has to offer. This would typically be bike rides around Mission bay, with Paddle boards or jetski’s Followed up by a few breweries to warm things up. I may take a dizzy walk through Balboa before we sunset in OB.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
