We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Scruggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I am not afraid of the word “no”. So many people worry about safety and security in their careers. But I have never experienced a time of “safety”. Industries rise and fall; and I was in the mortgage industry in 2008 when it all came crashing down. Something I thought was “safe” changed in the blink of an eye. For years, I had put off my dreams of being a full time recording artist for the security of that mortgage job and industry. When it was all gone, I knew that there was nothing to lose. I discoverd that the more risks, the greater the joy and reward. Don’t get me wrong, risks are hard work and require tremendous perseverance, patience and some partial resistance to pain. However, to go from hearing 20 or 30 “no’s”, to finaly get a “yes”, there are no words to describe the personal joy, pride and empowerment that happens. Once you see what you’ve built from the ground up starting to work, something inside you changes to desire and strive to keep it going. I know that if it all gets taken away, I have the ability, strength and talent to create it again. The highs and lows are more extreme, but that is where the feeling of living my true self and passion was never more real. My proud successes are the moments that were behind closed doors finding endurance I didn’t know I had. What the rest of the world sees is just like frosting on the cake. It just decorates.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a National recording artist who got my start in country music. Having played the piano since the age of 4, I was classically trained pianist and vocalist and have been performing and singing my entire life. Alongside my oldest son Ryan, I have opened for country music greats like Trace Atkins, Clint Black, Charlie Daniels and many more while touring. Today, I have transitioned into an accomplished Jazz vocalist and pianist with recent openings for Tony Orlando, Chubby Checker and Frankie Avalon. I am also the former spokesperson for “American Veterans of California”. I love being a Motivational Speaker, personal media coach the current Co-Host for the National TV show, “The American Dream” and several others TV shows. I am also proud to be the Media personality for Mutual of Omaha Mortgage. Throughout my career, I have been honored to be chosen to sing the National Anthem at many major league sporting events and military ceremonies. I am a proud Rotarian of the Rancho Santa Fe Club and the Spokesperson for Future Legends Scholarships. When not performing, I enjoy the San Diego lifestyle while being a wife and mother of six.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots in the county are really throughout the north and south. I love driving down the coast enjoying the laid back vibe in Encinitas and Carslbad. It is perfect for a relaxing day with great coffee shops and patio dining. When I am inland, I love the Wild Animal Park and the Orfilia Winery with beautiful scenery and peace. Saturday nights when my husband and I are feeling more ambitious, going downtown for the night life and music scene is always a treat. The best way to wrap up a weekend is Sunday brunch at the Embarcadero overlooking the bay which showcases what a special place we live in!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so grateful for Elizabeth Montes who was the first to take a chance on me in 2001 and brought me into the mortgage industry with no experience. She chose to believe in me and what I could learn and achive. James Rae in Nashville discovered me as a recording artist in 2004 and launched my music career. I am so grateful for that serendipitous meeting that changed my life . Torrey Larson and Craig Sewing gave me the TV hosting position in 2017 and trusted me in the drivers seat for The American Dream TV, growing into hosting other shows, and making me the Media Personality for Mutual Of Omaha Mortgage where I still sit today. These amazing individuals were critical to the diverse career, experiences and opportunities that have made me who I am as a TV Host, Media Coach and Music Artist. I owe a big thank you to them all and will never forget their kindness and trust in me. It is the people that come into our lives that can create new paths and blessings we didn’t see coming.
