We had the good fortune of connecting with Amethyst Gonzales-Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amethyst, what inspires you?
As cliché as it sounds, the world and people around me inspire me. My family probably inspires me the most. They have always taught me to work hard, question the world, and be kind to the Earth and everyone living on it. They have taught me so many important life lessons, and have never stopped telling me to reach for the stars.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My creative medium is photography. When I have the ability to share my passion for photography with others and it sparks an interest or joy with other people, that is when I get really excited. To be able to share something you are deeply passionate about, and it strikes a chord within someone else, it’s the greatest feeling. The journey to get to the position I am in now was not easy by any means. It takes countless hours of learning, failures, hard work, dedication, and realizing your self worth. You learn countless lessons along the way, some lessons you learn over and over again. One thing you learn is to not compare yourself or your work to other people. Everyone has different interests, different opinions, different ideas, but no-one has the exact same outlook as yourself. I sometimes still struggle with comparing my work to others, but I remember that I’m the only one with my eye and my visions. I want the world to know that I am just a girl who usually has a camera in hand, loves meeting new people, and capturing the special moments in life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first place I would take someone to is Pizza Port, its my favorite pizza place in Carlsbad. One of my favorite activities to do is watch the sunset. One of my favorite places to watch the sunset is at the Torrey Pines Glider Point. Watching the paraglider and hang gliders flying into the sunset is breathtaking and I recommend everyone sees it at least once. Surfing at Ponto Beach in Carlsbad and ending the day with a bonfire and s’mores on the beach is a perfect day in my eyes. The Oceanside Sunset Market is on the must do list, they have great local vendors and the smell of all the delicious food will have your mouth watering. No trip to the West Coast is complete without kayaking the La Jolla Sea Caves. If you’re lucky you’ll get to witness sea lions and grey whales migrating South.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my mom and dad. My dad is the reason I picked up a camera, he is the reason why I love the ocean as much as I do. My mom has always fueled my creative spark. She pushes me to think outside the box, always helping me with different concept photoshoots, and assisting me whenever I need. My parents shaped me into the person I am today, I could not have asked for better parents, and I thank them for always pushing me to be a better version of myself.
