We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Ward and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
We live in an age where you it doesn’t seem like you need much skill to be a graphic designer. Applications like Canva are available to everyone to create graphics. Anyone can do it…right? But a skilled graphic designer understands more than how to pick a cool font and image. An educated designer understands the importance of white space and will move items around on a page for hours, finding the perfect balance in the design. A graphic designer understands how important font choices are for giving a voice to the design and how fonts need to work together instead of competing in a composition. A professional graphic designer puts great thought into what your brand needs to connect your business with your audience. A skilled designer will research your brand and translate it into a compelling visual message. Can your quick design app do all that?

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am very proud of the work I’ve done as a designer and illustrator. While I was blessed to get my dream job right out of college, I still had to work my way up and earn the fun projects as I gained experience. With that experience under my belt, I blossomed when I started my own business and have designed album projects for the likes of Tim McGraw, Amy Grant, and Leann Rimes. Over time, I began to feel the itch to expand beyond album design. It’s always a challenge as a designer to break into a new industry. Thankfully, I think my album design work translated into other industries and I was able to expand and grow. I really wanted to use my illustration and lettering skills as much as possible, and that has translated to numerous book covers, posters, festival designs, logos, editorial illustrations and more.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When friends visit, the first place I want to show them in Coronado. I feel like I’m instantly on vacation when I drive over the bridge and into Coronado. My favorite thing to do there is to ride bikes all over the island. I take everyone to see the Hotel Del and then onto the wide, sandy beach. Then we grab burgers and milkshakes at the Burger Lounge on Orange Avenue. The next day is all about the North County beach life! Depending on my mood, we’d check out Fletcher’s Cove, Moonlight or Beacon’s beaches, maybe take a board out to catch a few mellow waves. Then it’s time for tacos at The Taco Stand in downtown Encinitas and homemade ice cream at Jo Jo’s Creamery. We’d end our perfect beach day with a bonfire at Moonlight beach while watching one of our picture perfect sunsets.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to my first boss and Creative Director, Jan. She gave me a chance to work on my craft right out of college. I was working at a record label, my dream job, and had the chance to work on a great variety projects. It was there, under her guidance, that I discovered my love for art directing photo shoots, as well as my love of combining illustration with design.
