We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Nichols and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because I can express myself artistically better than I can by speaking.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to create wild and free wall hangings by mixing textures and vibrant colors using yarn and unconventional materials such as strips of fabric from clothing like Aloha shirts, wire ribbon, jewelry, buttons, beads, tassels, and toys. I have my own Saori loom set up in our living room and our home is filled with lots of yarn. Our cat is very good and does not eat the yarn but likes to sleep on piles of it. Strings are left unfinished, tufts of roving are stuffed in, and items dangle to create an impressionist piece. I like to create themed pieces like TMNTS, Justice League, Olaf, Spongebob, Patriotic Tofu, Tropical Peppermint, Gone Fishing, Sedona, and nature themes like seasons and oceans. I also create custom “memory weavings” using items from loved ones such as a favorite shirt, ties, jewelry, and other small items. I did one for a couple getting married and used things that represented them like rings and a butterfly for a new beginning. One was a teacher so I used a bus button, pencils, pens, markers, and the other was a gamer so I used fruit from pins to represent Fruit Ninja. I made one called Yosemite out of a grandfather’s flannel shirts, Yosemite patches, and his dog ornaments.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Disneyland, Legoland, California Adventure, Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Universal Studios, Balboa Park Museums, La Jolla, malls (Lego Store) walking on the beach, hiking at Torrey Pines, eating a frozen yogurt, speed boating on Mission Bay, going out to dinner and a movie.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Art of Autism organization and Debra Muzikar have given me amazing opportunities to be part of a local art community and to participant in art events like Mainly Mozart.
