We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Kannan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Persistence is key. Running your own business is rife with stress, uncertainty and tension, as is the practice of law, but one must keep a long term outlook on life and have the proper resources to navigate turbulent times. This is where it is important to have different outlets to properly channel the stress, including but not limited to creating art and exercise. For me, my passion has always been film and music. The practice of law has given me the opportunity to channel this energy and continue to create.
What should our readers know about your business?
Kannan Law Firm is a local, Spanish-speaking law firm focusing on immigration, criminal defense and auto accident cases. We pride ourselves on providing personalized service to ordinary people caught under extraordinary pressure. Running a business means being patient, persistent and doing one’s best to take nothing personally. We have a job to do under stressful conditions and we owe it to our clients to provide the best representation possible. We can never make any guarantees as to outcomes, but we work hard to put our clients in the best positions possible. We also must always be ready to pivot and adapt to any given situation. Things oftentimes do not go the way we anticipate, so improvisation is key. I am blessed with a honest, hardworking and patient team of employees and would not be able to function without them. Thank you to our paralegal Daniela Sedano and our legal assistant Angelica Monie for the wonderful work you do. I have also worked to surround myself with a team of hardworking and trustworthy attorneys I can rely on for advice and also with whom I can collaborate on cases. It is crucial to have loved ones to rely on or a professional therapist to help navigate the turbulent waters of running a law practice. Exercise is key. I enjoy hiking, running, and boxing training with my friend at the gym near my office. Spending time with nature, meditation, and artistic expression is necessary. My artistic passion has always centered on the cinema and music, so I spend much of my creative energy looking for film or documentary projects to work on as well as composing music with a close friend of mine from high school.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Spending time with nature is crucial. We are fortunate enough to live in a beautiful city where within an hour drive, we can reach mountains, the desert, or the ocean. I always take friends and family members to Imperial Beach. We usually start with a walk at the Tijuana Estuary Reserve and tour the native plants and watch the various birds. We then proceed to the beach front, observe the waves while enjoying a scenic view of Mexico in the distance. If time permits, I also make it a point to introduce others to the Salton Sea, the massive accidental sea sitting in the middle of the desert near Imperial Valley. Once a bustling hub poised to be the next Palm Springs, it is not an all but abandoned body of water that is at once eerie, bizarre yet a tremendous artistic inspiration as I have never seen anything like it before. Hopefully, there will be some measures taken to improve the sea’s condition to be a helpful resource for birds and so local residents will not face health concerns due to the toxicity in the air.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, therapist, and friends.
