We had the good fortune of connecting with Abayomi Maddox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abayomi, is there something you believe many others might not?
One piece of conventional advice I disagree with is the idea of needing college to be successful and take care of yourself. I spent two years at Florida A&M University before realizing that; anything I could teach myself in college, I could learn for free. I needed real-world experience and the freedom to express my vision with photography. There is nothing unique that is expressive about mirroring another artist’s style. I’ve learned more about photography starting my own business than I ever did in school. Learning new skills to enhance what I already love makes it that much more valuable.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My photography reflects everything I capture in vibrant natural colors. From portraits to a wedding and even wildlife, I use my camera to create an image that feels so real you feel like you are in that moment every time you see it. AIM Photography’s slogan is AIM towards what comes naturally. That means that every project I work on will show the subject in all their natural beauty. I started my business shortly after leaving the military and, It was a slow process at first to find clients but, I found that it’s not about online exposure, but the content of my work that brings clients and brings them back. I also learned how to treat my craft as a business instead of a hobby. Photography is a way for me to show people the world through my eyes and, I AIM to inspire all of my clients to love who they naturally are.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would’ve never have been able to stay in San Diego and start my business If it wasn’t for the support of the family I found here after leaving the military. Not only did they help me transition out of the military but they are also apart of AIM Photography.
