We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I started my own business in Real Estate because I felt there was more to life than the typical 9-5. Coupled with having a baby, I knew I would have to make some crucial career choices to ensure I’d be able to provide not only financially but also physically for my daughter. Prior to getting into real estate I worked in the legal field for approximately 7 years. Putting in 40+ hours a week and living paycheck to paycheck. Time off was limited to 40 hours of paid vacation a year, and if I needed any other time off I was lying about being sick or having a Doctor appointment.

I finally decided I wanted to get my real estate license. I enrolled at Miramar college, took the required courses, passed the exam and became a licensed Realtor. However I didn’t jump right into real estate full time. I didn’t know how to get started, how to get clients or which brokerage to sign up with. It was overwhelming to say the least.

I was scared and didn’t know how I was going to figure it all out on my own. I had it OK at the law firm I was at and scared to place myself in uncomfortable situations. I was scared to seek the uncomfortable to become comfortable. As Conor McGregor says, “the more you seek the uncomfortable, the more you will become comfortable.” I had an OK salary, good benefits and a retirement plan. Everything I could want…. but the work life balance and financial freedom. So I practiced real estate part time and quickly realized that if I didn’t go all in, it wouldn’t be fair to my clients or myself. So I ultimately took the leap of faith, believed in myself and made the decision to go all in because I knew we deserved more. I knew time was irreversible, and the last thing I wanted to do on my death bed is say “I should’ve, could’ve would’ve.”

Fast forward 3 years, I’m blessed to say there is nothing better than being your own boss. Getting things done on your own time and the ability to be there for my daughter combined with the financial freedom and work-life balance I struggled to have for so many years.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have found true joy in helping people and families with the journey of home buying and selling. I’m dedicated to and go above and beyond to provide the best real estate services possible. Whether its helping to educate on the home buying process as a first time buyer, or coming up with a strategy to effectively market and sell your home for the terms, price and timeline you want. Being an entrepreneur definitely isn’t easy. Especially being in an industry that’s so saturated and constantly shifting. However, when you are truly passionate about what you do, refuse to give up and stay committed to your vision. Your challenges turn into solutions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a tough one, especially during Fall in San Diego. I would definitely want to show them everything SD has to offer.

Day 1: To-go orders from La Perla #3 and Northside Shack for breakfast burritos and acai bowls in Point Loma. Load back up in the car and head to Sunset Cliffs for breakfast with a view. Next, bolt up to Birch Aquarium and La Jolla shores for snorkeling. Followed up with a late lunch at Shore Rider and bonfires by the beach.

Day 2: Head to Balboa Park, check out some museums and eat lunch at The Prado. Then at night enjoy Downtown and Gaslamp.

Day 3: Day trip to Tijuana!!

Day 4: Road trip to my hometown Borrego Springs, but first…. Stop in Ramona on the way down for breakfast at the famous Ramona Café, then continue on down for epic off roading adventures and hiking.

Day 5: Borrego Springs Cont’d. – Breakfast an Kendall’s Café, a round of golf at Ram’s Hill, and a mouth watering burger for lunch at Carlee’s Bar and Grill.

Day 6: Leave Borrego and stop for breakfast at Lake Cuyamaca, then enjoy old town Julian and Fort Cross Old Timey Adventures.

Day 7: Wander around Old Town State Park, eat hand made fresh flour tortillas and wait for their departing flight.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to my daughter, Ava. You’re my biggest supporter and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. I would also like to thank my parents for all of the support and advice throughout the years. My sister and brother-in-law for all of the help with Ava when I’m with clients and also for all of the support you have shown me as well.

Lastly, my family away from family. Dean Aguilar Group, for your commitments to the team, unbeatable mentorship and professional/personal development.
