We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Mooney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I noticed a lack of traditional martial arts (specifically karate) in Long Beach. With my experience I felt that I could help bring that back to our city.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think one of the things karate has taught me most is perseverance. Being able to push passed where you think you are capable of going goes along way. Not giving up during difficult times. That’s one of the core values that Kombat Karate aims to instill in others.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Long beach is an exciting city with alot to offer. It has a strong community with a chill vibe. That’s one of the things I love about long beach. There’s lots of amazing food to try, places to walk around and shop and beautiful landmarks like the Queen Mary. Experiencing the Long Beach lifestyle is a treat in itself.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Nancy and my Father Wayne for seeing the vision and supporting the dream. As well as Joseph and Michael Claycomb for all of their ongoing support.
