We had the good fortune of connecting with Chantal Crompton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chantal, what do you attribute your success to?
Fine Print Funding is built on the idea that “empowered people empower people” and we’re most proud that our scholars end up being future donors and giving back to other students. By giving juniors and seniors financial support to engage competitively in the college application process, their hard work and academic success is celebrated. We are successful because they remember the value of that support in their lives and give back to the next generation of scholars. The cycle of giving makes our brand successful and we’re proud to see the philanthropic spirit of the youth.
What should our readers know about your business?
There are many incredible nonprofits that help students afford the lofty costs of attending college, but I’m proud that we found an untapped niche where we can support talented and hard working young people. The cost of applying to college is a barrier to entry, especially for students in under resourced communities. Not many people realize the inequality created by expensive standardized tests and large costs to submit the applications. When I started teaching high school at a Title 1 school 8 years ago, this was a huge wakeup call for me. I told my seniors to apply to a diverse range of colleges (to increase their chances of getting accepted and financial aid options), but $70+ an application is an impossible ask for many families who are struggling to pay day-to-day expenses. I want the world to see the brilliance of our students and, most importantly, to see their ideas and voices represented on college campuses.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I grew up in San Diego and could fill pages with restaurant recommendations – being so close to the border, we’re able to get incredible Mexican food and I recommend iSalud! in Barrio Logan for Taco Tuesday. The entire neighborhood has personality. We live in North Park and The Friendly is the best pizza in San Diego; if you go, be sure to try their iconic Dirty Flat Top Burger. My husband and I love to escape south of the border to Valle de Guadalupe for incredible wine tasting and cuisine and then over to Las Rocas in Rosarito for some relaxation and surf at K 38s. The farmers market scene in San Diego is also unparalleled. Little Italy fills blocks with artisans and creative vendors like the Typewriter Troubadaour who writes custom poetry for patrons. His work makes incredible gifts!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, and cofounder, Justin Crompton is the reason why Fine Print Funding went from an idea to a formalized nonprofit. Neither of us have cut a salary, as we’re in the process of building Fine Print and want to make sure our students are taken care of first and foremost; however, he worked full time unpaid for months to make sure we could launch successfully. That type of sacrifice speaks to his heart for the important work we’re doing. Our board of directors also deserves immense credit for building the company from the ground up. Their vision and expertise have been invaluable in collecting data, recruiting donors, and refining giving processes. Laura Dinanno, Sarah Norton, Lauren Ramers, and McKenzie Taylor are the most passionate individuals I know in the education field and we couldn’t be luckier to collaborate with them.
