We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronica Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Veronica, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Growing up in San Antonio, Texas, where there were limited programs to support adults with disabilities, has greatly influenced who I am today. Despite facing challenges due to my cerebral palsy, my upbringing instilled in me a sense of resilience and determination. The lack of resources and support in my community pushed me to advocate for myself and others with disabilities. It taught me the importance of empathy, perseverance, and the value of creating opportunities where they are lacking.

My background has shaped me into a strong and compassionate individual who is committed to breaking barriers and creating a more inclusive society for individuals with disabilities. Through my experiences, I have learned to embrace diversity, overcome obstacles, and champion for equality and accessibility for all.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Up A Notch Abilities is an agency that works in collaboration with a team of support for each individual to achieve independence in a creative way. I’m most proud of where Up A Notch Abilities has gone and believe it or not it has all been by word of mouth. It was not easy to get here, it took lots and lots of tears in trying to get it right but as long as I think as a student first, I’m sure it will be alright. I overcame challenges by just being me, in life some will get you and some won’t, and that’s okay, my plan is to keep it moving! What sets me apart from others, I would have to say insight, because I can see what others may miss, weird huh…I’m most excited about how everything I’ve learned in life is finally playing out before me and my dreams are definitely coming true! Through my journey it most definitely has not been easy. I have learned that not everyone has the same mindset but the right mindset can definitely help everyone in creating an inclusive community. I aspire to be a voice for those who face similar challenges, to spark conversations about accessibility, and to drive positive change in how society perceives and supports individuals with disabilities.

My story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. I want the world to see that limitations do not define us; they propel us to achieve greatness. By sharing my experiences and training and accomplishments, I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams fearlessly, to stand tall in the face of adversity, and to never underestimate the strength that lies within them. My brand is not just a reflection of my journey, but a beacon of hope and empowerment for all who dare to dream without boundaries.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow!! This happens at least twice a year, lol I feel like you could never run out of things to do here! So first we start with a sunrise over in Spanish Island every morning, when I’m not too tired…I am pescatarian so most places we go to are usually special finds that others have shared or a repeat restaurant. I like Crown Bistro for breakfast in Coronado, I love a good pho from Flamin Pho. In a nutshell, I’m a coffee freak so anywhere a good cup of Joe is, I’m there. Oh I love sunsets, the museums in Balboa. Then there are other times where I just want to sit in the couch with a cup of coffee and a concha! I also love a good art gallery!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband and kiddos have played a great role, especially on those long coffee nights. I’d also have to say I have a group of phenomenal woman in the community who also care for their loved ones who also experience disabilities and that has taught me more than any book I’ve read yet!
