We had the good fortune of connecting with Ángela Quijada-Banks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ángela, what are you inspired by?
I am continually inspired by my ancestors, my colleagues and even those that I do not particularly agree with. My ancestors of African and Indigenous descent have gone through so much for me to be here today, to fulfill my divine purpose and be unapologetically who I am which inadvertently sends the message to others to do the same . As I continue to grow and evolve, I am understanding that no one has to understand or agree with my vision. It was not given to them and the more I procrastinate then the more time will pass and I will not be operating at my highest potential. It is imperative to challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone. On the other side is a whole other level of joy and fulfillment that I could not have imagined possible.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a spoken word artist, I enjoy expression through words , mental imagery and emotion. The art of feeling how another feels is called empathy even if we have never experienced it ourselves. To be just for a moment, right there with the artist – lost in the words, the vibe , the essence of the other is art. What sets me apart is my own unique story and my vulnerability to share it in hopes of change, peace of mind and to build community with others. I share this artistic side of me in my coaching ;whether it’s author coaching, purpose coaching or holistic health coaching or reiki , my books and honestly every facet of life…it just shines through. I enjoy being able to connect with others on a soul level…we have way too many robots these days. My hope is to get someone to not only think but to feel … deeply..to awaken a part of who they are that they’ve unconsciously been suppressing and it be apart of a chain of reactions for the individual to uncover their divine purpose and step into their true power. I’ve learned many lessons along the way, many of them the hard way…like to be mindful of intellectual property because people may love your work so much that they copy it and there may not be a way to prove it was yours. In this digital age, people are hungry for new and fresh content ideas…it may not even be personal. So, be proactive and copyright your material…even if you don’t think it’s that great, you may surprised to see it again on someone else’s page! What I want people to know is that no matter how much pain and suffering you may have gone through or are currently experiencing YOU have the power to change the narrative. Your life may have to completely 1000% change from what it currently is but you can make any and all of your dreams come true no matter how big. And you can ultimately, alchemize your pain to purpose and power!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a fairly structured person when it comes to business but in my personal life, I am very in the moment ya know? I’m very spontaneous about things so honestly we would take it day by day however, because I live in San Diego,California we would definitely hit the Caves in La Jolla, catch some waves at mission beach , take some bomb selfies of course haha, eat some delicious tacos and watch a few thriller movies! I’m not an alcohol person but I do love a good virgin piña colada! Those are sooo bomb! San Diego is pretty cool but since I’m not from here- I’m continually learning more and more about it. The weather is beautiful most of the time so even going to the park and having a little pic nic would be amazing – I just love feeling the sun on my skin.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe that we go through out life and meet many tiny bits of light and inspiration -most of which are unconscious. However, I want to shout out Jeffrey Bunn, whom I know now did all that he could in the ways that he could to support and uplift me especially into my adult hood. My dad has consistently been someone who has shown up for me and dusted me off even when it felt know one else cared. Throughout my journey, I ‘ve also met Liza Weidle whom I regard as my aunt and has been an incredibly loving and supportive soul in my career and personal life. She makes it a point to check=in on my wellbeing and lend a hand when I need it. I’d also, like to shout out any person that has touched my life even for a moment and shared a word or action of encouragement , love, support and recognition. At this point in my life, it has been many human beings that I would be here all day to try and name them all. Jennifer McClafferty, Thank you for your support and care about my future and belief in my abilities to make it happen. Shout out to Lola Bunn and my soul fam! Shout out to my amazing husband, Michael Quijada-Banks that is my #1 cheerleader in my life! My best friend who cheers me up when I’m down, celebrates me when I am up and together breaking generational curses and building a wonderful life beyond both of our wildest dreams- I love you so much and am excited for this next chapter and will always have your back. And shout out to all the music, books and random netflix finds I was guided to as they also made an impression on me and continue to shape who I am in this world.
