We had the good fortune of connecting with Gekel Gossett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gekel, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is that I am happy with what I am doing and still find joy in every process of running my business. For me it is important that I run my business as something I love to do and not just as a job i took on.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My store consists of handmade items and all of my handmade items are made with the intention of making someone happy. The prize is knowing someone is happy with their items and you used your hands and personal creativity to make those things. For me hand knitting started as a way to cope with anxiety and mental health , to turn that into a business wasn’t easy. There is a constant doubt and struggle to start because you don’t want something that is a coping mechanism to turn into stress or a chore. So starting the business in itself was the challenge , but now i am so glad that i did. Making things to completion is relieving but the feedback I get from customers is such a reward and a motivator.

One thing I want the world to know about my brand is that is fueled by the thought that with just our hands we can produce and do an unlimited amount of things.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a city where there are a ton of beaches , so I would take them exploring our many beaches. We would eat in the La jolla beach area where there are the most breath-taking views and have drinks at the cutest bars in Pacific beach. Aside from the beaches, the nightlife in the Downtown Gaslamp quarter of San Diego is unmatched , there is such high energy and good vibes all around. If were looking for a more quaint aesthetic while going out , one of my favorites is Old town San Diego. This area has so much history about the city along with good food , outdoorsy feel, and from time to time live music!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have no story without my family. My whole business is dedicated to my late grandmother who inspired me to live creatively and happily all while exposing me to other creatives who have made it so far in life. Aside from dedicating my business to her, my family helps me operate my business and keep me motivated. When anything gets hard as a business owner there are there to support me and make sure I keep going. I own the business but my family plays a big role in why it runs.
