We asked some of the city’s leading artists and creatives to tell us about how they decided to pursue an artistic or creative career. We’ve shared some highlights below.

Nancy Karina Medel | Artist, Sound Healer & Jeweler

I have pursued an artistic career to allow my creativity unfold itself in unlimited ways. I believe by doing so, I am allowing myself to discover new parts of myself and at the same time connect with others in a non-physical way but emotional and spiritual level. I’ve admired art and its many forms and shapes it is presented to us ever since I can remember. We are taught that art is colors in a canvas, although that is true, they don’t teach us that everything among us is art, including ourselves. Through this perception, I learned to appreciate the duality of art and life. I am now constantly creating art through paintings, soundscapes and making hand made jewelry. All forms of art that I share are a reflection of my journey of healing that helped me grow and evolve. Read more>>

Dan Jachimowicz | Brewery Owner & Head Brewer

I believe that our creativity and imagination is our most important tool in moving forward with our lives and relations. There is a particular joy that comes in watching others enjoy something that you have worked hard to create, even more so when it is something that stands out and speaks to people. This is what originally lead me to brewing beer. In my first attempt, I instantly fell in love with the endless possibilities that brewing provides. This is the core of Longship Brewery. Read more>>

With Art, music, dance, creative thought…the true essence of life is released; creation, to feel freedom within ones own body and mind. The Black Market Brigade chose Music & Art because, when all is said and done and the curtain falls on the stage of our lives…we know we did what we were meant to, to ignite the fire and dreams within ourselves and others by rocking out and making a safe space for people to feel accepted and able to be as wild and free as they want to, and The BMB has their back. We choose freedom over safety. We choose love over hate. We choose a life of artistry, and it chose us. -Chase your dreams and don’t let anything stop you – Read more>>

Kelly Bennett | Jewelry Designer & Fabricator

Honestly, given my personality, I don’t really feel like I had a choice. I’ve been involved in some creative pursuit or other since I was a child. I originally wanted to become an actor/dancer and had the opportunity to attend a performing arts school from the time I was in 4th grade through high school. After graduating from high school, I went to college where I majored in Theater Arts and minored in dance. I looked at my transcripts once and it was almost comical how easy it was to see I was meant for something creative. Math and science, C’s and D’s. Theater, and English, almost straight A’s. Once I graduated from college, I moved to Chicago to pursue a career on the stage and I really thought that was going to be it for me. However, during this time I started to make jewelry as a hobby. After some time, I burned out on acting and really got into jewelry and gemstones. Read more>>
