We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Karina Medel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nancy Karina, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have pursued an artistic career to allow my creativity unfold itself in unlimited ways. I believe by doing so, I am allowing myself to discover new parts of myself and at the same time connect with others in a non-physical way but emotional and spiritual level. I’ve admired art and its many forms and shapes it is presented to us ever since I can remember. We are taught that art is colors in a canvas, although that is true, they don’t teach us that everything among us is art, including ourselves. Through this perception, I learned to appreciate the duality of art and life. I am now constantly creating art through paintings, soundscapes and making hand made jewelry. All forms of art that I share are a reflection of my journey of healing that helped me grow and evolve. I have come along way of unlearning patterns in my life that limited me into pursuing my dreams. I want to be an example that we are capable of creating and manifesting the dreams that linger around from our inner child.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
All of my art is a reflection on earth and its frequencies. As far as my paintings, I focus on painting faces,I like to portray people essence through colors, I love to show how colorful one’s essence truly is. My hand made jewelry, Sacred Ocean Waters was created with the intention to empower all who wear them. Each Piece is similar to each other yet each piece holds a very unique energy to them. In sound healing, I like to use my instruments as an extension of myself, They help create a very soft and dreamy space. I am most proud of Sacred Ocean Waters. It was created from all my creative endeavors and they are all different but they intertwine with each other beautifully. One of my biggest accomplishments, is having Jhene Aiko wear my earrings. I’m so proud to have one of my biggest inspirations supporting me by wearing earrings that I created specifically for her. I also have my earrings displayed at Tribal Roots Tattoo in Escondido, Village Rock Shop in Carlsbad and Day Dream in Escondido and soon to be displayed at Yoga Branch Yoga Studio in Vista. I am here where I am now through the trials and errors that I have experienced, for all the times i gave up on art. I am here being supported now, able to share my creativity with all. The biggest challenge for me was to trust in myself and put my self out there. I’ve learned to always be open to new opportunities and look for ways to grow.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite nature spots in San Diego is the Carlsbad Cliffs, through out all day and night the sight of the ocean is beautiful, especially when there are high tides. Some of my favorite hikes are Torrey Pines, Elfin Forrest and Anitas Trail Canyon. My favorite restaurants are Milk Organics in Vista, The Plot in Oceanside, Phatties in Escondido, and The Yasai in Convoy, and The Village in San Diego. All these restaurants are vegan and owned by a family. For breweries, I love Barrel Republic for how unique it is, You self serve your own beer/wine etc. If you are feeling to get a tattoo, I recommend checking out Tribal Roots Tattoo in Escondido, for Pierings, I recommend Piercings by Traci in Oceanside. They have high quality piercing jewelry and one of the best piercers in North County, Sam! For small shops, I love The Village Rock Shop in Carlsbad and Day Dream In Escondido.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give gratitude to all who have been part of my journey, whether they we’re part of my journey for a short or a long time, their prescence collectively have brought me to this moment.
