Through our work we have been constantly amazed at the incredible things people in every neighborhood are working on. What’s even more exciting is that they all have different stories, backgrounds, strengths and weaknesses. That there isn’t a single formula for success means that everyone can take their unique set of strengths and characteristics and turn it into a success story. We recently reached out to some folks we admire and asked them what characteristics they feel are responsible for their success.

Attention to the consistency of quality has always been a commitment of mine. as an actor or a director I never “phone it in”, but always strive to do my absolute best with each project, even when it isn’t the easiest road to take. i believe I brought that ethic to North Coast Rep when I arrived in 2003. I pushed hard for the organization to become more professional both in our artistic product and in our business model. I challenge and empower our artists and staff to strive to do their best each time. To go beyond what is comfortable. I think that has paid off with the high quality productions we present as well as the loyalty we have developed with our patrons. They know we will always be striving to be better. Read more>>

We love our products. It sounds so cliché, but it is very true. If there is no passion behind it, you’re just creating a soulless product. Read more>>

It is important to have a strong vision but also be open to new ideas and evolve. Our mission has always been to support local artists, fair trade and highlight handcrafted US made products. As well use our venue space to host creative workshops and impact the community in a positive way. We are a retail shop so we need to think about what our customers want. At the same time we also need to love what we are creating in our space and be excited to share products or artists we discovered. If it resonates with you it will resonate with customers. We think outside the box. We wanted to create an environment and a space that is unique. We come up with innovative ideas and put a twist on it. For example we didn’t just want to be the first and only rare plant shop in San Diego it had to be something different! We created a Rare Plant Vault complete with steampunk transparent door, rainforest sounds and examples of mature exotic specimens. Read more>>

The most important factor in the success of Plant With Purpose has been a commitment to measuring our impact, and then striving for continuous improvement. As a nonprofit, working internationally in poverty reduction and environmental restoration, it can be hard to tell if you are really making a difference. We have had to design rigorous tools for measuring change and then use those to ask ourselves tough questions. It is often easy to find individual stories of success or the one person whose life has been positively changed. It is harder to know whether or not those results are typical. That has forced us to design studies that look at what is happening to the average person participating in our program. As a result, what are doing today is vastly different than what we were doing twenty or twenty-five years ago but it is far more effective. Read more>>

Trust and truth. We (my husband and I) have seen time and again that by being true to the message on our hearts and by utilizing that as our guide for our business, the universe always provides. By cultivating patience and steadiness through the practice of meditation and mindful living, I have revealed an unshakeable trust that everything is always working out for me. No matter the challenge in front of me, I know that I can always choose a 10,000 view of any life or business situation that leads me to endless solutions. As we remain truthful in our messaging and mechanics of our business, those who are aligned come to us with very little effort. There is no selling in truth, it is something bigger, something more real, and something that no compromise to please the masses can sway. Trust and truth, not just for business but for life. Joe Decker | World’s Fittest Man

The most important factor behind my success as well as the success of our company Gut Check Fitness is that we do not nor have we ever followed fads, trends or gimmicks. We do one thing the best in the world and that is only results oriented outdoor fitness. We don’t do yoga, Pilates or Tae Bo, we only focus on fun, motivating but highly effective workouts. This style of training not only helped me break the Guinness World Record for the title “The World Fittest Man” and complete many of the world’s most extreme events but it’s the exact same training that I created to do just that. I always say, Gut Check Fitness is tried, true and proven. “If you want to be the best that you can be then you‘ve got to train with the best.” Can I get a Gut Check?! Read more>>

Moosa Creek Nursery grows California native plants. This is a very specific niche in the general horticultural market. I believe our success derives from our ability to focus on this sector and become the best you can be in that field without getting distracted by temptations of short term gains and straying from what we know and do best. Timing has also been significant as we started small and grew as demand for drought tolerant, habitat enhancing plants grew. To take advantage of this market growth we have always put customer service and plant quality at the forefront of our efforts so that we have been able to garner a strong reputation for healthy, high quality material and exceptional response to our customer needs. Developing brand allegiance and a robust web-site presence have definitely helped us become a leader in the local garden center market. Read more>>

Love and passion for this work! I have been fortunate enough to have discovered Yoga at a time in my life when I needed it the most. It wasn’t a matter of physical fitness or flexibility gains for me, as much as it was an attempt to find peace of mind. When I discovered Yoga, it was as if I discovered the antidote to the bouts of uncertainty, anxiety, and depression that punctuated my early twenties. The alleviation of these heavy states, however temporarily, proved to me that seeking to quench my thirst for deep existential satisfaction was not to be garnered from my social life, parties, or romantic relationships.
