Through our work we have been constantly amazed at the incredible things people in every neighborhood are working on. What’s even more exciting is that they all have different stories, backgrounds, strengths and weaknesses. That there isn’t a single formula for success means that everyone can take their unique set of strengths and characteristics and turn it into a success story. We recently reached out to some folks we admire and asked them what characteristics they feel are responsible for their success.

Success: A loaded word! There are several important ingredients to factor in when thinking about the word “Success.” What is success to you? It may be something very different to different people. Is it money? Is it that next industry award? The title after your name? Getting published? Having a thousand likes or a million views? For me personally, success is measured in my own sense of accomplishment, and that is directly tied to the reaction my work gets from my clients and their target audience. If they’re not happy, I’m not happy. Read more>>

Bianca and Michael Middleton | Podcasting

Bereal & Milk is all about the first word which is to Be Real. We have authentic conversations about social injustices, controversial news, and current events. But with us being kids at heart we express these conversations over a meal that a lot of us enjoyed as kids and still till this day. A bowl of Cereal. We like to tackle topics that the ordinary news stations do not cover. Topics we have spoke about are Child Trafficking, Police Brutality, and Missing Persons Cases. Although the topics are heavy, it’s offset with our upbeat personality. We also play games, make jokes, and have live performances from artists. Read more>>

Amy Clover | Anti-diet culture health and movement coach

Authenticity and embracing the fact that I will ruffle feathers. Diet culture permeates the health and wellness world so being an anti-diet culture health and movement coach invites some comments and pushback! I’ve realized over the years that the more ME I am, the more relatable I am. Trying to be the “perfect” coach or social media icon just doesn’t translate into someone who can help the people I want to help. People want help from someone who’s real and owns their opinions and that’s what I strive to be. Read more>>

Without a doubt, my success comes from the Lord. There are of course so many layers to my answer. I’m a woman of faith, so I try to live according to my purpose and honor God in everything I do. I don’t always succeed, but I earnestly try. You may think I’m joking when I say this, but I believe that I am blessed and highly favored and my success is a direct result of Him having his hand on me. Read more>>

Lisa Stevenson | Owner, Rise Hawaii Jewelry

I think one of most important factors behind the success of Rise Jewelry is bringing authenticity to my products and brand. I personally have always loved diving, shells, beachcoming, and everything ocean related. I have found that bringing my personal passions and authentic self into my business has created an energy and drive within myself to keep the business burning bright, and has me inspired for the future. For example, I love sharing stories about my diving adventures, or picking people’s brains about their favorite shells, dive sites etc. Read more>>

Krysta Hughes | Pedacito de Mexico Owner

I believe the most important factor behind my success is my relationships with others. By others I mean every single person I interact with. The way I treat my family, friends, clients, partners, and others weighs heavily on my success because if I am not treating those people with kindness, respect, and patience then it will negatively impact my relationships. Without healthy and strong relationships in my life I recognize it would make running a business much more difficult. Read more>>

Sarah Russo | Plant medicine specialist, writer, editor, research assistant

I simply followed my deepest interests and that is what opened doors for me. If you have an idea that is unconventional and “risky” to the standard parameters of the space you work in, still find ways to bring it into being. You don’t need to distill it down or conform it to a given marketplace or sector. My skill set is eclectic. Some may look at what I do and think it lacks a distinct drive or ability to plan for the future. But all my seemingly random experiences have brought me to where I am today. Getting well-rounded experience and interest in multiple aspects of your field is the way to go. Think about what you do as a living ecosystem. What comprises your world? Who is in your community? What innovative ways can you connect the dots? Read more>>

Jenny Sellers | Reiki Master and Spiritual Coach

The Groves of Zen is an energy-based business focused on bringing balance to the energy body which, in turn, helps support the physical body. As the brand was being built, I recognized that it quickly had an energy all of its own. Tuning into the energy of the business entity was absolutely the most important factor behind the success of the brand – Everything from logo and website creation, pricing, offerings, social media posts…it all came about by getting to know the essence of the brand that wanted to be brought out of my thinking mind and into the physical world.
