We had the good fortune of connecting with Selena Arellano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Selena, what do you attribute your success to?
Community is the most important factor behind my success of Sun Flor Co. Since the beginning my local community has shown how valuable connection, support and encouragement is for a business like mine. As a florist our work is rooted in unifying people and celebrating together. It feels natural to build a community. Our support has elevated Sun Flor Co into a growing company with a variety of offerings and services.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Floral art is very personal, we design for others to enjoy in the moment. My mother was also a florist and I learned about design from her in one way. I then worked for a resale company and learned another way to design. Now I design in my way which includes techniques from my past, the flowers I love and the season’s best of nature.

I learned that my best designs are when I am given creative freedom. I can’t replicate a photo of an arrangement but I can be inspired by it’s shape and color story. My best work comes from the act of trust, my clients allow me to choose what is freshest and I am able to produce work I am really proud of.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start with brunch at Cocina 35 and enjoy the best french toast and chilaquiles plate. Then we would head to my favorite – North Park! First must is to pick up a matcha horchata latte at Holy Matcha and shop around my favorite store, Artelexia. We would head to sunset cliffs for the best views while on a long walk and enjoy the sun. Night time means tacos and beer so Barrio Logan is where we would be, Tacos Salud and Border x Brewing have the best in town. Next day would consist of a local farmers market, lunch at Cafe gratitude, maybe a walk through Balboa Park and an exciting dinner at Kings and Queens Cantina. Basically a Latinx San Diego foodie tour, what else could anyone want?!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize my father, Jose Luis Arellano. He is a successful flower grower in Southern California, providing fresh farm flowers across the nation. I wouldn’t have this type of career without him and his endless support. I have always been positively influenced by his dedication to growth through hard work and risk taking. I am extremely privileged to learn from such an knowledgeable person.
