We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Ryan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Success: A loaded word! There are several important ingredients to factor in when thinking about the word “Success.” What is success to you? It may be something very different to different people. Is it money? Is it that next industry award? The title after your name? Getting published? Having a thousand likes or a million views?
For me personally, success is measured in my own sense of accomplishment, and that is directly tied to the reaction my work gets from my clients and their target audience. If they’re not happy, I’m not happy. I also get great satisfaction trying to learn new things with every project. As a late-bloomer entrepreneur (I started my business at 59 after a career in Marketing and Advertising), I take all that I have learned as a strategic client advocate and translate that into meaningful storytelling for their brand. All good marketing is storytelling, and there are few vehicles more powerful and compelling than visuals and video to connect with people emotionally.
Finally, it’s about SERVICE. The creative arts is more than just a creative industry. It’s also a SERVICE industry! I’ve worked with many creative people in my career, and the ones that I wanted to work with were those who took my input and really tried to understand the vision…they wanted to achieve the objective. The ones I choose not to work with are the ones that are so stuck on their own version of the story, they don’t listen and adapt. There’s nothing more frustrating than a stubborn or narrow-minded marketing partner. Those relationships don’t last long.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Most of my time is invested in the creation of videos for my clients, but there are a few other ways I keep busy and make a few extra dollars. Streaming video has become more important since the COVID-19 pandemic kept us all closer to home. I’ve helped clients connect with thousands of viewers for events as diverse as “Virtual Trade Shows”, weddings, memorials, athletic events and concerts.
There are plenty of videographers out there, many of them shoot wonderful images. My niche is helping business owners connect with their customers. This can be through brand videos, testimonials from their raving fans and customers, or product demonstrations. My background in Marketing and Advertising helps me get the strategic message across to the target audience. That’s what sets us apart from most videographers. I coach and pull the story they want to tell out of them. There’s an art to getting normal everyday people comfortable in front of a video camera.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the beach and go there whenever I need to unwind, find inspiration, relax and breathe. I’m so thankful to live here in Southern California where there are so many wonderful places in nature to just be yourself.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The biggest ingredient in the growth of my business over the past few years has been through the relationships I’ve made in various Chambers of Commerce. I chose to make AWARENESS my first strategic pillar as I launched my business. That meant doing a lot of small or pro-bono jobs for influential people who would help carry the “buzz” about Ryan Video Productions. Networking and making friendly advocates is critical. I’m grateful for the local Chambers that I am a member of.
