We had the good fortune of connecting with Sunny Chou and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sunny, what makes you happy? Why?
Being fulfilled makes me happy. Everyday I do something I am passionate about and in my opinion loving what you do is the key to happiness. When I graduated from college I had the choice to pursue a traditional career path or try and bring to life a business idea I had while in school. At the time most job offers for me wasn’t something I was passionate about and I ended up starting my own company. Because of that decision today I do something that I love and the sense of accomplishment and purpose in what I do brings so much happiness.
What should our readers know about your business?
Tomo’s purpose is to challenge the golf status quo; redefining the idea of the perfect golf shoe. Our products aren’t designed behind a computer screen, but rather tested on real golfers, out in the action. After countless iterations, we’ve kept the soul of a golf shoe in grip and traction. However, the similarities with the traditional shoe end there. What you find instead is a golf shoe that redefines the category with functionality, versatility, and incredible comfort.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Wow, what a tough question, so many good places to visit. Of course everyone should visit the popular spots such as Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. The farmer’s market in Downtown San Diego is also a fun place to check out the local produce and foods. The gaslamp quarter is also great to visit. Another fun idea is to drive to imperial beach, and taking the Silver Strand all the way to Coronado. It’s fun to use something like Zipcar or Turo to get yourself a convertible or fun car to do this drive. Of course being a golfer myself, I would also recommend Coronado Golf Course and Torrey Pines golf course. If you are not a golfer Torrey Pines is also a great place to hike. Lastly San Diego Rooftop Cinema Club is also a great activity to catch a movie under the stars. With food I would only recommend one place, and that is convoy street in Kearny Mesa. You can’t go wrong there. I would say just walk around and follow your nose.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think starting a company is always scary, and without the encouragement of my wife I don’t know if I would have started my own company. Her encouragement, love, and belief in me continues to be a daily driver for everything I do. Sometimes the road to entrepreneurship can be lonely and unknown, and she’s a great companion for that. She’s always positive and brings a lightness to difficult challenges on this entrepreneurship road.
