We had the good fortune of connecting with Janis Vogel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a creative coach I empower creatives to expand by stepping into their autonomy. I am also a seasoned film editor. I have worked for Spike Lee, Laura Poitras, and Ziwe to name a few. I lived in New York City for 13 years. I was a machine. I would work 90 hour weeks for months and then take long breaks to recover from burnout. When I had a child 4 years ago this was no longer sustainable. Let’s face it, it was never sustainable. I realized I could only take care of others to the degree I took care of myself. I had to become resourced so that I could be a resource.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I believe all humans are inherently creative and when we practice setting boundaries, centering ourselves, building a relationship with our body, and tapping into joy, life shifts. When we dare to take care of ourselves we can build the capacity to take care of others, to make our best work, to live our best lives.
I have transformed my life and now I help others do the same. I guide my clients on a journey from burnt out to lit up. I have helped people overcome fears that were holding them back for years. I have helped people find their voice, and their calling. I have helped people leave toxic jobs and relationships. Connecting with humans is what brings me joy, so I formalized what I had always done, and began my creative coaching business 2 years ago to support people who have been where I was, stuck in a cycle I was ready to get out of, but had no idea how.
I create containers with my clients that allow them to be unapologetically themselves and use their differences and their unique gifts to propel them into prosperity and self-empowerment.
I have just opened the doors to Creative Freedom. An 8 week coaching program with 1 on 1 sessions where we go on a gentle, yet powerful, self-paced journey. Each week we arrive at action steps that feel challenging, exciting, rewarding, and dare I say, fun! I support my clients via voice and text in between sessions. It is an immersive and transformative experience. At the end of 8 weeks my clients have double the energy and are able to wield their creativity with new levels of power and joy aka flow!
I also see coaching and working towards Creative Freedom as a form of activism and collective healing. When we dare to take care of ourselves, we can take care of our world!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A day in my best SoCal life looks like a sunrise walk along the Carlsbad State Beach, a trip down the 101 to the Self-Realization Fellowship in Encinitas followed by lunch at GOODONYA, a hike at Calavera Hills, picking up books at the Oceanside Public Library, thrifting at Captain’s Helm, browsing at Rising Co., dinner and comedy at The Privateer, and a sunset walk along the Oceanside Boardwalk. I also love the coffee shops around here: Communal, The Cup, and Revolution Roasters are my favorites.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Community is very important to me and I am excited to be a part of a community of badass humans unflinchingly working to protect peace (internally, externally, environmentally). I recently moved to SoCal and my new friend Jenny Burlington took me under her wing. I am grateful to her for introducing me to other entrepreneurs in town including, Kevin Ann Jordan of Tailored Stylist. I am so thankful for the community and support I receive in my new town. It’s so important for us all to lift each other up!
