We had the good fortune of connecting with Vikita Poindexter, SPHR-CA, SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vikita, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m a risk taker by nature. Starting a business is risky. I walked away from my corporate position to start my business which wasn’t easy but so worth it. I continue to take risk daily as I branch out into other areas of interest. I have not always had the knowledge or the experience, but if given the opportunity I will obtain it.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
“Every mountain top is within reach if you just keep climbing.” — By BARRY FINLAY That’s our motto. Poindexter Consulting Group, LLC. is a Certified Management and Human Resources Consulting firm committed to providing the total Human Resources infrastructure a business needs to succeed in today’s complex work environment. With over three decades of experience, our team understands the intricacies of labor law, workers compensation claims, Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), sexual harassment training and prevention, EEOC complaints and compliance, training and development, conflict resolution, discrimination claims, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), employee benefits, recruiting and so much more. The rules and regulations governing human resources change constantly. Let us interpret and assist your company in implementing what in many cases are complex, confusing and seemingly contradictory requirements. We are “A Partner You Can Trust” I started my firm in order to be available to care for my son with medical challenges as well as keeping a balance for my daughter. Teleworking wasn’t acceptable in the early 2000’s. I begin doing what I knew and loved which was human resources. I found my niche market which was small business owners as I was one. To be able to assist them with the complexities of human resources for a fraction of the cost was my goal. It wasn’t easy sitting at my son’s bedside watching him struggle to breathe and trying to retain a client to provide HR services. However, I know that my firm is providing services that small business owners desperately need. What sets us apart is that we partner with our clients. We focus on the law so they don’t have to.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well Temecula is the wine country of Southern California I my opinion. First we would stop by Sharon’s Creole Kitchen for a bowl Gumbo. I would schedule a wine tour and make our way to the wineries. My favorite would be Leonese Winery for a glass of white merlot. Once we’ve traveled through the wineries, we may have to hit 8 Bit Brewery for a nice lunch to continue the fun. To cap the evening off, I would need to find my favorite band, B.I.G. (Brothers Igniting a Groove). That would start the weekend off. To recover and relax, a day a Glen Ivy would be just perfect.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are 3 people who I owe my success to. First would be my mother. She was the epitome of a role model. Not only was she smart, having earned several degrees and her doctorate in education in the 70’s but she believed in giving back. She was an advocate for those who couldn’t fight for themselves. She fought my rights to do what I am doing know which is my passion. She taught me how to win and lose with grace. She taught me the value to believe in myself because no one else may. My two adult children who are the very fiber of my being. My daughter, Kaila who encourages me daily and provides me a different perspective. My son Carey, due to his medical challenges propelled me into starting my business. I’m a mother first. Life’s challenges has created me to be the business owner and advocate that I am today.
