We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Downie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Victoria, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The factor behind our success is consistency. Opening our own business was hard, it was very hard, especially opening during a pandemic but we stayed consistent. We worked our butts off. We continued to be transparent along the way with our customers. We kept our values at the fore front always giving top notch customer service, accommodating to our customers needs and genuinely loving what we do. I feel like if your heart is in the right place and you are doing your very best to your abilities, then thats really all you can do. Stay consistent and you can reach your goals no matter what they are.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We definitely are not your typical grooming salon. We would like to think we create an experience for your dog. Each dog is unique, having their own individual needs. We do our best to provide a stress free environment by providing pet safe essential oils, dog friendly tv, soothing music and the option to have two groomers. One to groom and one to love your dog and help them feel as safe and comfortable as possible. Our interior is homey and we pride ourselves at making it as stress free as possible. We provide pet safe essential oil diffusers, dog friendly TV, soothing music, and also have the option to have 2 groomers. One to groom and one to cuddle during their appointment. You can find farmhouse style kennels and a puppy cove where puppies can play while they wait for their appointments. Booking with us is not just receiving a service but really indulging in an experience. I promise your pup will be begging to come back!

I wish I could say it was easy… it was everything BUT that. The first year for businesses are hard as is but throw in a world pandemic and every business in sight closing, you could say it was a recipe for disaster. Every other day I was crying asking my husband if we should just shut our doors. I felt defeated. I felt like I didn’t stand a chance. It didn’t make sense for us to continue but we KNEW we were called to do this business. Our faith has played a huge role in our success. We did what we knew how to do… we prayed, we showed up, stayed consistent and we worked hard. Luckily we made it through our first year!

I love people! I want people to know they can come to our location and expect to feel heard, loved and safe. Dogs are another part of the family and should be treated as such.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Top kid friendly attractions: San Diego Zoo is phenomenal. I have been to other zoo’s but nothing quite compares to the SD Zoo. Walking through Balboa Park is always a fun choice. Imperial beach has become a little hidden gem that is becoming more popular as well as downtown Chula Vista with local shops, breweries and eateries. Walking along Coronado beach is a must and making a trip up to Encinitas is definitely worth it. Favorite place to take our kids to get their energy out is Ninja Factory in Chula Vista.

Top eateries: Cucina Urbana is one of my top favorites, Harney Sushi in Old Town, Burger Lounge in Coronado is great to hit after a beach day, Romescos Tapas in Bonita is great on a Tuesday night for happy hour. Novo Brewery in Chula Vista has an outstanding burger and their beer is fantastic. Cocina 35 in South San Diego is definitely worth checking out for breakfast. Liberty Station should also be on this list!

Top Hiking: Potato Chip Rock, Goat Canyon Trestles, Otay Mountain, Cowles Mountain, Rock House and Torrey Pines are a few favorites.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a lot of people that have played a huge role along the way. Two that have stuck out the most are my husband Joe, who gave me the confidence every step of the way. He also is the one who literally built the entire inside of our location with his bare hands. He made me realize my potential and never allowed me to give up when times got tough. I am who I am today because of him! It sounds cheesy but he really is my #1 fan!

Another person who has really made Barking Spot what it is today is my mom Viviana. In December 2020 she joined our team and helped revamp our entire retail store. Her heart and attention to detail has really taken us to the next level. Later this year we will be announcing our own product line thanks to her. Stay tuned!!
