We had the good fortune of connecting with Vasudha Deming and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vasudha, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve spent 20 years creating skills training programs for businesses and organizations. Again and again, I’ve seen people light up when they learn something new that will help them be successful at work and in life. That might mean learning how to communicate in a more positive, productive way or it might mean overcoming the challenges of their job role. And many other things as well! Eventually I was inspired to expand this training (and coaching) from the corporate world to the wider community. I’ve heard so many people say, “You know, I learned something in a sales training program 10 years ago that has helped me in my family life ever since,” or “To this day, I still practice that technique for staying calm when challenged.” I also wanted to enhance classes with uplifting products and other resources. So I moved Noble Learning out of my home office and into a vibrant brick-and-mortar space in Normal Heights. We have a shop full of unique books, journals, activities, cards and other products that immediately spark inspiration and joy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always loved words–reading, writing, and editing–so unsurprisingly, my early career was in publishing. I was in my 20’s then, so after about three years I got restless and quit my job to go run (literally) around America for four months. After that, I lucked into being hired by an acquaintance who was starting her own training company. My job was to write a series of training courses, translating her years of business experience into learning modules that we would sell to organizations across many industries. Professionally, these were my most formative years: I learned to design and develop curricula and then later moved on to facilitating the training, selling the courses, managing other trainers, and coaching clients. After 18 years, we sold the company and I founded Noble Learning as my own one-person business. I’ve created alot of training courses in my life–and somewhere along the way also co-wrote four books for McGraw-Hill–but when I went solo I decided to restrict my work only to the topics and skills that I really love. With Noble Learning, I focus on customer service, selling skills, positive management techniques, and employee engagement. Outside of client work, I also make time to offer free classes on meditation, concentration, breathwork, and similar topics.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When out-of-town friends visit, there are few “must-do” items on the itinerary and they begin with food… First up is at least one delicious vegetarian meal at Jyoti-Bihanga. One of the evenings will definitely feature the artistic pies at Zia Pizza. When it’s time for a sugar splurge, I take them to Extraordinary Desserts. Also essential is an early morning run (or walk) around Miramar Reservoir, and I like to follow that with a light Italian breakfast at Pappalecco. For coffee, my first choice is Dark Horse Roasters but there are also some other great choices in San Diego: Hawthorn Coffee, Communal Coffee, and Heartwork Coffee to name a few. One day might feature a hike at Torrey PInes or Cowles Mountain (with Liquid Eden water in our bottles). There are a few very walkable neighborhoods in the San Diego area, so it’s always fun to just venture out to one of those for a few hours and see what happens. I especially like Normal Heights, South Park, Little Italy, and Encinitas.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve practiced meditation as a student of Sri Chinmoy since 1988, which in turn has led to my involvement in distance running and my engagement in some very meaningful humanitarian causes worldwide. Noble Learning has evolved from my first-hand experience that a deep inner life–however a person wants to define that–is the driving force behind happiness, satisfaction, and overall well-being. All success begins within!
