We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie Mar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valerie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is scary! But it’s also very thrilling for me. If I’m not taking risks, I’m not living! The role as a “selfpreneur” is continuously teaching, testing, and pushing me out of my boundaries. It’s the only way to find out if something is working or not in my business. The great reward that has come with it all is the amount of learning that it has brought up in my personal life. I get to learn about my character each day. I get to dissect where my motivation comes from, where my habits were built, and what I want to change about myself! ……It’s interesting really!….Running a business (even a small business) positions you into a whole world of self-development. I love it!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This year I am super excited to add services to the Boutique! It was a hard year for everyone and it gave me a chance to take a step back and re-evaluate how I wanted to continue running my small business in a way where I can be of service to others. I noticed I had been lacking a sense of fulfillment in my brand and within myself, so that’s when I knew some kind of change had to happen. I started offering personalized mystery bags; meaning they were personally shopped for the customer in accordance to their needs and/or wants. This allows for the customer to not only save time, but to also relieve the stress from being out at malls, shops, or waiting in line to enter stores. In addition to that, I now offer closet cleanouts/organization, personal shopping, personal styling, photoshoot styling, and wardrobe styling for any occasion!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my gosh! What a fun question! San Diego is such a huge playground!….. We would first start off with a delicious acai bowl at either Roots Bowls in Hillcrest or Mad Beets in Pacific Beach. From there we’d have to decide on an adventurous hike at Ho Chi Minh Trail in La Jolla or choose a more challenging one at Mission Trails Regional Park. We’d definitively have to squeeze in some beach time for both some fun in the waves and lunch time! For lunch, I would take them to the good ol’ Beach House Grill at the boardwalk in Belmont Park. It’s a perfect little spot for some people watching and Southern Cali beach culture. From there, we would cruise around the boardwalk either by foot, bike, or skates and catch a beautiful sunset along the way. To stay in the area, I would recommend a delicious modern, baja, coastal meal from Pueblo for dinner time! And that’s just one day!….. On a week long trip, a lot can happen! I would want them to experience a beach bonfire, Coronado Island, the La Jolla shores seals, Little Italy dinning, a boat ride around the Bay, and perhaps even a trip down south to Baja California, Mexico!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is not a specific person, group, or organization. I would have to say this Shoutout goes to my customers! They have seen me and my journey go from an online boutique, to a brick and mortar, and back to an online boutique due to the pandemic. They are patient, they are supportive, they are loving, and I can physically feel their good vibes being sent my way each and every day (even if it’s trough social media). I feel that they genuinely want to see me succeed and that’s what inspires me on a daily to keep pushing through any obstacles that may come my way! They are my motivation!
