We had the good fortune of connecting with Tessa Elisabeth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tessa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I love this question, and I find it especially important when in need of the motivation to push through some of the more difficult tasks that come with building your own business. I’ve been labeled “artistic” and “creative” by others pretty much my whole life. As far back as I can remember I’ve just had this incessant restlessness in my soul, and I found outlets for it in any type of craft or creative activity I could get my hands on. I use to have (and still do honestly haha) notebooks filled with stories, songs, drawings, fashion lines, and all sorts of entrepreneurial endeavors that I would one day complete and share with the world. I’m a dreamer, all day. My loved one’s would say I sometimes live with my head in the clouds. But, all of that aside, I think the biggest motivating factor to pursue an artistic/creative career for me really lies in the idea that I have the opportunity to positively impact others with my creations. We all know the cliché saying “An image is worth 1000 words,” but truly I believe with all my heart that something as simple and glorious as one painting, one song, one story, can really change someone’s life. I can think of endless examples of artistic expression that influenced my life for the better. When I look back, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the creators that that took the time and energy to accomplish those endeavors and gift their art to the world. That gratitude sets my soul on fire, and in my search for my purpose in life, I find nothing more gratifying than the possibility that my art, my creations, could be a game changer for even just one person’s journey. To me, art is the path to building a better world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The MoonSluice journey began back in 2016 while I was in my final year of college. It started out as a creative writing/art project as a way for me to express myself and get back into doing something that I loved after feeling robbed of my free time through years of working multiple jobs and completing school. I began devoting small bits of time here and there to my creations as a way to stay true to myself, and find an outlet for a messy, difficult time in my life. Upon graduating with a degree in International Affairs, I felt disheartened by the injustices of our current systems, and I wanted a better way than what I was presented with to contribute something of value and impact to the world. And thus, MoonSluice was born.

What is a MoonSluice?

Simply put, a sluice is a passage way that opens and shuts allowing water to flow through it.
As we know, our Earth and our bodies are made up of mostly water.

The moon has sway over the tides of the ocean, how then does it not also have a sway over our own internal tides?

The moon has long been associated with Mother Nature, creation, deep expression, and the unveiling of things unseen just beneath the surface.

A MoonSluice is any being on Earth that allows the light and love of Mama Moon to flow through them, keeping the Sluice of the heart open so that unique expression may pour out lighting up the world one MoonSluice at a time.

Today MoonSluice is a space for sharing my own artistic expression in the hopes of inspiring others. Ultimately the dream is to build a coalition of creatives, (or an army of MoonSluices if you will), to go forth and change the world, one creation at a time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve got mad love for OB. The Ocean Beach community has been a special place that has contributed to so much of my inspiration and just overall spiritual well being over the years. You can’t beat a sunset over at Sunset cliffs, and drum circle Wednesday’s, or as I call it tribal council, is the best way to let loose under the moon and feed the inner wild. Longboarding down the strip over in Mission and Pacific Beach is always a fun time. I love to just grab a slice of pizza (there’s a million great places), take a stroll and check out the art and murals all over city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My closest friends and family for their immence patience with me in my endless pursuit of adventurous endeavors. I am grateful for each one of you for being sounding boards for all of my crazy ideas; for the roofs, beds, meals, and company you have provided when I have ran myself to my limits once more. Of course, Mother Nature and Great Spirit for the breathe of life and the beauty that surrounds us in the mountains, trees, rivers, oceans, and creatures. They are a neverending source of inspiration, love, and guidance. To all the artists and creators that made it their life’s work to bare their raw souls to the world. To the Humboldt and San Diego communities for supporting and encouraging my dreams, being my teachers, and dear friends. To the Redwood trees for their wise council. Also to those who have come in and out of my life and taught me hard lessons, those who I met in passing but left lasting impacts, and those who are gone but live on in the spirit they shared with me in their life.
