We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanner Schmidt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanner, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is something that drives me to exist everyday! Everytime I’m worried about something going on in life, I try to think “well what’s the worst that can happen” and “how will I ever learn if I never make mistakes.” It’s really just a natural part of my motivation and journey to take risks everyday! Get outside my comfort zone, enter the void, and go with the flow. It’s how we learn and grow as people and get that much closer to our long term goals.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started with second hand denim (mostly jeans) from thrift stores and began going to work with bleach and dye techniques. Garment Dye for me is a therapeutic experiment because every piece is a different story and you never know what your going to get. Every denim reacts differently and every color combination develops in a new way, oh and also waiting a full day to see the results builds it up. Using different solutions and dying techniques can make or break the look so it really comes down to the details in the whole process.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh the spots to choose from! I love going to the local fish taco shop down the street and waltzing over the beach up in marine street! Nothing better than some fresh salt water in your hair and a hot day to layout and relax. Another good spot is amplified in Pacific Beach, the best donor fries in town and some local drafts to refresh. I love going to the linda vista skatepark for some ramp entertainment and an assortment of demographics. Thrifting in hillcrest and sunsets in Kate sessions! All right! Can’t give the real secrets out!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Toby Brown, Screen printer and artist. He prints all of my graphics and has his own collection @boof.usa. It’s important to keep your local businesses in your circle of support and collaborate on everything you can!
