We had the good fortune of connecting with Susie St John and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susie, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I remember listening to a NPR podcast about highly successful people like Steve Jobs,Mark Zuckerber.  They said the usual: passionate, optimistic, don’t wait for permission. But I FORGOT about the sacrifices. Success is not about equal balance, it’s about harmony. Steve Jobs had such strong opinions it got him fired from the very company he made, Apple. Listen to his surprising Stanford commencement speech. Nikola Tesla never married or had kids because he felt they would get in the way of his work. Success is about being your very best. Sacrifices unknown. Early in my interior design career, I wanted to quit. I was tired of the politics, pulling all nighters, playing games with the building department. So, I quit. I went to work for a longtime family friend’s flower shoppe. What could go wrong with playing with flowers and talking with people giving flowers? I quickly learned politics and games were here too. It’s everywhere. I needed to figure out what was important to me. The projects? the learning? the advancement? the people? the recognition? being mentored? mentoring others? Find what you love. Find what you’re willing to put up with. Success is not being the top dog. It’s about being the very best you. I strive to be the best me. I fail. I learn. I move on. Trying not to sweat the small stuff. This sets you apart from the next guy. Often the right decision in life is not the easiest. Not glamorous. Not the most money. These are sacrifices. Know your limits. Making the difficult right decisions pays off in the end. Paying it forward to yourself. Paying it forward to the world. Others are watching. Be a positive influencer in the real world. Not in social media, but with friends, family, young, old, strangers. Advice. Inconvenience yourself. Try a job that works you hard. Set high goals. Be kind to yourself. Listen to those you don’t see eye to eye with. Be open. Be reasonable. Be respectful. Travel.Never give up being the very best you. By doing this, you’ll make life easier for the future you. All the while setting yourself up for success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’d LOVE to tell you more about my passion! Embrio design studio is a residential interior design studio located in coastal Carlsbad, California. Why the FUNNY NAME “EMBRIO” design studio? It’s all about starting from the “beginning”. I don’t assume I know what you want. I ask. I listen. Then I design. I ask a lot of questions like what do you do when you wake up, what do you do when you 1st get back from work/ grocery shopping/ sports, what are your mister/ kids/ dog doing during all this. While listening I also listen for the golden nuggets that make you one-of-a-kind. I take the answers you gave me + your golden nuggets + “spawn” that into your REMARKABLE home that works EFFICIENTLY for you to make you the most SUCCESSFUL you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hop on my bike! Let’s ride the Coastal Rail Trail. A flat trail that follows the train tracks along the breezy SoCal coastline from Solana Beach to Oceanside. 1st stop, classic benedict breakfast at Café Topes in Carlsbad. Inspired by the owners trip to Costa Rica’s “topes” speed bumps. Reminding us to slow down. No wifi there so pretend it’s 1980 and let’s enjoy each others company and eat an extra dirty cinnamon roll! Next, back on the Rail Trail to Oceanside pier to check out where they moved the historical “Top Gun” house. Go down to beach level and relax with the kids on the playground located on the sand, do a little fishing off the pier and visit large Charlie the pelican. I’m a huge fan of burning calories to eat more calories so off to Lake Hodges Pedestrian Suspension Bridge. The longest stressed ribbon bridge in the world! This trail leads to chaparral and tall majestic trees at the foot of the hill. Such a beautiful healthy escape. After all this activity, I’m hungry for CicciottiTrattoria Italiana white linguini and clam sauce located in the Village of Carlsbad. Lastly, before sunset, let’s walk over to Linda’s Yogurt shop, grab an ice cream and watch the sunset after another glorious day spending it with the people I love. And supporting the local hard working mom and pop shoppes!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Remember, I mentioned not sweating the small stuff. Well, I spend as much time as I can with my big sister learning to not sweat the small stuff (then she had to move to London, Kentucky which makes our visits that more priceless). My hubby, who I’ve known since the age of 12, is another influencer who shows me and the world generosity, perseverance and hard work. I’m a better person because of him. Lastly, my biggest influencer is my mama, mein Schatz, which means treasure in German. Growing up I had many challenges, one of them dyslexia. She guided me through all the sadness, said she was my biggest fan. Her kind words and teachings carry me daily even though she died 15 years ago. I am forever. Grateful to them all.
