We had the good fortune of connecting with Susana Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susana, what advice would you give to someone who feels like they are facing insurmountable odds?
When the odds are stacked against us, it’s easy to feel powerless. A helpful perspective to keep is that, despite your present or past challenges, you are still here! The life-force within you has proven, time and again, your strength over everything you’ve been through. Until the last breath you take, there is more resilience in you than anything else. Were that not the case, you’d no longer be here. So, perhaps its more fitting to identify yourself as insurmountable! This idea comes from the philosophy of Yoga. Putting it into practice can be as simple as adjusting your breathing pattern. We can’t control every outcome, but we can control how we breathe. A simple change to how you breathe can be enough to keep you feeling vital in meeting the challenges you face. If you’d like to explore this more, I’d love to hear what you’re facing, and illuminate simple ways to enhance your life-force and well-being in a Yoga as Therapy session.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Of course! My local company of one, Urban Yogi, was founded in 2010. I serve private clients in a therapeutic setting that is centered around total well-being. I see people by appointment regularly to shift challenges like sleep disturbances, pain and anxiety towards positive change. Our therapeutic approach includes postural and non-postural Yoga to outshine dis-ease by boosting vitality and encouraging deep rest. Unlike a Yoga class in which a teacher provides instructions for an entire group, I create a customized practice for an individual, based on their health concerns and quality of life. The “plan of care” they receive often includes a specific breathing technique, counter-postures for areas of physical strain, a relaxation practice and small adjustments to one’s daily routine. I consider what will set the client up for success, given the constraints on their time, energy or physical ability. When people manage to integrate their Yoga Therapy plan into their life, they tend to have even greater outcomes than they originally sought. It’s an awesome process, and every session with every person is different.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This summer, I’d probably grab some empanadas to-go from Yerba in PB, and head to Encinitas. I’d take my friend to the Self Realization Fellowship for a walk through the meditation gardens, followed by an ocean swim at Swami’s. That beach is divine!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to Soul of Yoga in Encinitas for the depth of wisdom teachings they bring to our community.
