We had the good fortune of connecting with Sue Kenney-Pfalzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sue, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had been getting Reiki sessions for almost 30 years when someone suggested that I learn Reiki Level One so that I could do Reiki on myself for healing a back problem I was having. I first had a Reiki session with the teacher and immediately after asked if I could join the Reiki Level One class that would be happening that weekend. Once I completed Level One, I was hooked and quickly completed Levels Two and Three/Master. I decided to open my own Reiki practice because I get so much joy out of sharing this healing energy technique with others. By sharing Reiki, I believe that I am making the world a more positive place, one person at a time!

My personal journey has had many twists, turns, and side-trips along the way, but everything has led me to where I am now so I am grateful for it all. I was a dancer while growing up and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from The Ohio State University. Two weeks after graduation, I married the love of my life (and we’re still together 29 years later!). I always thought that I would be a dance teacher and choreographer, but I soon found that I didn’t actually like teaching dance very much. That’s when I found myself in my first career quandary. I took some steps towards becoming a physical therapist, but that wasn’t a good fit either. During this time, I also experienced infertility, ultimately undergoing eight artificial inseminations with no luck. Eventually. I decided to go to law school. In my second year of school, my husband and I adopted our oldest daughter, Helen. We adopted our youngest daughter, Naie, just after I passed the bar exam.
I really wanted to help people in my career – especially kids – so I went into family law. I was hoping to focus mostly on adoption law, but I ended up mostly representing people in divorces and custody matters. After six years, I got burned out and talked to my husband about possibly moving overseas. He was up for it and our kids were still young, so I took a job as a legal aid attorney in the Republic of Palau, an island nation in the Pacific, where I helped many people get justice.
After two years, we then lived outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for nine months where I once again taught dance. This was when I had my second career quandary, and I decided to get a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Administration. After receiving my degree, we moved just outside Washington, DC, so that I could get a job at a national refugee resettlement agency. Again, I wanted to help people! After working in refugee resettlement for about five years, I became interested in helping asylum seekers at the U.S. Southern Border, and I’ve been doing that work for the past 6 years or so. My current job brought me to Carlsbad a little over two years ago and I love it here!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever we have friends visiting, we take them for a bike ride down Coast Highway from North Carlsbad to Carlsbad Village. We may stop for lunch at Dini’s and then head back north for the gorgeous ocean views. We also like to go to La Jolla, Balboa Park, Coronado (including a stop at the Hotel del Coronado) and have dinner at Old Town Mexican Cafe. If there’s time, we could go to Drag Brunch at Lips!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my Reiki teacher, Marcela Alva. It was thanks to her teachings that I decided to become a Reiki Master and open my practice. She’s so warm and giving and always happy to provide additional guidance to her students.
