We had the good fortune of connecting with Sierra Richardson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sierra, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson that my business has taught me is that it is crucial to show up every day for yourself and then you will have no problem standing out to others. Things in my career have not always turned out the way I have imagined but only better because I did not give up on my big dream. Some days are harder than others: I am working sixty plus hours, I have not had time to spend with my husband, I have been staring at the computer for ten hours, and I am taking phone consultation after phone consultation. Those hard days have lead to some of my best days truly and if I would have given up on that woman who is sleep deprived than I would not be where I am today. No matter how much those around me had faith in me, and how I am ever so thankful for my family, my career would bot be fulfilled if I did not take those first steps by myself. Ultimately my wedding planning business taught me to put faith in myself and God in order to build a brand on something I love, love. The freedom of working for yourself is thrilling because I was not given a roadmap, I did not know of any other business owners. One day I woke up, quit my job of five years in the middle of the pandemic, and started something new for my self. I know every day there is someone waiting for me to fail, wanting me to give up, questioning my business but if I do anything it would be everything but those things. I am so thankful to have learned to trust in myself and the process and will continue to do so.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Richardson Events is a Wedding Planning, Event Coordination, and Design business based in North County San Diego. I began to work full time in 2021 after a few years of helping others with their events and parties. I decided to make the jump with Richardson Events after planning my own wedding because weddings are high demanding with unlimited decisions. I built a portfolio with some of the events I had of my own and ones I helped others with to build my clientele. I am now currently working with forty to fifty couples this year that have found me on multiple platforms and through word of mouth. I am planning out my schedule for the next year, 2023. This road that I have been on with my business has been a battle because the struggles of work-life balance. Nobody tells you when you work for yourself, it is the most testing job you will ever work when you love what you do and do not want to let yourself down. It is a constant challenge when you turn down help from others but also turn down free time for yourself. I have experienced taking on more than what I should, but still what I can handle. I am my biggest competitor when it comes to my business because I always want better for myself and for my couples that I work with. I want to give everyone the most enjoyable experience therefore I am constantly taking on new clients and inquiries. I am most proud that I have stayed true to myself in my business and have given my one hundred precent every day. I am proud that I have not given up. I am also looking to earn my degree in this next year and that is a reminder that I will work twice as hard to have completed all of my accomplishments at an early age. Often we put a time frame in our heads and it is not very realistic to ourselves. I believe things have happened for me the way they happened because I worked extra hard for them and have put in the effort to not let myself down. If I have let myself down, it gave me motivation the next time I needed a pick me up. I am most excited about starting the new chapter of my business. I am planning on expanding my services to other states as well as a new brand I will be launching next year. It is exciting to always keep going and never quit once I realized my dreams are limitless.
One thing I would like others to know about my brand is that it is important to be authentically you and be proud of that. Every wedding is supposed to grasp the love that you share with another individual. People will say there are rule books for weddings, however I believe you should have the day or days as you seem fit. It is okay to be the unconventional couple who is not living up to the magazine wedding stories. I believe the couples I work with enjoy the open and honest factor about me. I like to create a gate of trust with the people I work with because they are inviting a stranger to help with their day and then all of a sudden I am not a stranger to them. Some of my clients think of me as family and I accept that. The advice of not creating friends at your workplace is unpopular to me because every client I have, has a friend in me and I will never change that. If I could bless every person with the support system I have been given I would do it in a second. Everyone is deserving of a great event whether that be in front of two hundred people or ten.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have lived in San Diego County for over fifteen years and there are constantly many great places to go! I would say I am a bit of a hermit but for those who love to try new places to eat and grab a coffee, then this would be my itinerary. Pacific Beach is great for a good night out with friends or date night! There are tons of bars and food spots to hit up there. A food spot in Pacific Beach I would recommend is: Rhythms Chicken and Waffles. Visit Liberty Station for a full day of fun! Fig Tree Cafe is a great breakfast place to visit. Tamarack Beach is by far my favorite and check out Cafe Topes for great food and coffee.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to my amazing parents, who have always wanted the best for me, my four siblings, and my strong husband because they have been the most supportive people in this journey. The love that I have received from them is indescribable and I would do this journey all again if I had each of them by my side.
A reason I started my wedding planning business rooted from the special love that I share with my husband, Omar. Without him I would not be able to encourage others to love and live freely for their wedding day. A special shoutout would go to my little sister, Faith, who is the most encouraging person I know. She has been a part of the process hands on by going to events with me, helping decorate event spaces, timeline adjustments, layouts, and being the best support system I could imagine. I hope I am making an impact as a young business owner in her eyes, but mostly as her older sister. I want her to know how her friendship and sistership has taught me to never settle for less. Thank you to all my family and my husband for making every day one worth being extra thankful for. I can not imagine another group of people by my side when all my dreams come true.
