We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaw Strothers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaw, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson I’ve learned through my business is that positivity and hard work feed each other. With only one or the other, you’re half as effective. Hard work alone will get you a long way, but may eventually burn you out if your attitude is bad. Positivity alone will keep your spirits high, but can’t get the job done on its own. I’ve found that I’m most effective when I can combine the two; I get tasks done with a great attitude that makes the work go faster and stays enjoyable. I believe that in the end, my supporters appreciate the thought and care that’s gone into the work and it makes them feel good too.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TypeONEderful is unique in that it’s the only apparel brand that’s entirely focused on positively impacting the lives of people with Type One diabetes. There are a few other companies that sell clothing with diabetes puns and slogans on them, but none are as consistently positive and empowering in their messaging as TypeONEderful. I’m proud that in a few short years we’ve been able to spread that positivity to countries across the globe. One of the biggest challenges for the business has been finding and reaching people with diabetes and their loved ones. Despite nearly 1.4 million people with Type One diabetes in the US alone, no one hangs out in any single place. We’re spread out across social media platforms and communities within them, not to mention those that aren’t active on social media at all. With in-person events limited recently, it’s become even more challenging to reach people that spend little time online. We’ve benefited greatly from word-of-mouth recommendations and testimonials since our launch. The best advertising is a happy, repeat customer. If there was one thing I want people to know about me and TypeONEderful, it’s that I understand the challenges that come with a diabetes diagnosis and how keeping a positive outlook on life can do wonders to help maintain and improve your health long-term. After more than 25 years living with it myself, I know that your attitude and perspective can make or break your behavior, and as a result, your blood sugar levels on a daily basis. TypeONEderful’s mission is to help improve that perspective and support a wonderful life with Type One diabetes.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m still learning the city myself, but I’d suggest Balboa Park for the park itself, but also the zoo and museums, a hike at Torrey Pines and perhaps a tee time, and stops at a few of the beaches like La Jolla, Coronado, Del Mar for families, or the pier at Oceanside.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents have given me the most encouragement and support over the years and I can’t thank them enough for giving me the room to grow, fail, and grow some more. I couldn’t have come this far without their help.
