We had the good fortune of connecting with shabina khan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi shabina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

To be honest my life journey lead me to where I am today. I started as a scientist, and then as I entered motherhood l gave my sister a helping hand in her business and ideas just fell in to place. The thought process came naturally as the experience of being a scientist, my love for good make up and helping my sister in her salon gave me the perfect ingredients to purse my brand. One thing that I learnt along the way in my journey is that an essential ingredient is taking risks and being confident in carrying them out.

Starting a business is a commitment and requires dedication, resources and sacrifice.

At the age of 15, my journey in to science began as a subject I was good at and later became a scientist with a passion to formulate everything and anything I desired. The experience has shown me how travel could take me beyond my limited horizon.

After earning my BSC in Biomedical science, and getting employed by Johnson and Johnson orthro clinical diagnostics I realize I could go one step further and create products that really cared for this skin.

As a Scientist and working in healthcare my role was to be at the forefront of my patients’ health from taking blood and prepping it in the lab to stability testing and formulating medication for cancer patients. This gave me the basis to create whatever I wanted but the idea didn’t click here. Later I found myself helping my sister out in her salon whilst my children where in school. We had the same complaints about products that salons used on a regular. This was when Serenity Hue was born, I could change things bringing in my science knowledge and creating products that really care for people and their lifestyles needs.

I have always favoured clean science as well as health. In curating my experiences that deliver impactful results, I could help people to see how make up doesn’t have to be bad but could serve as a worthwhile. Also, you come to have a very different perspective on life from traveling. Ultimately, travel transcends your life experiences transforming you into a version better than your previous self and delivers a proactive lifestyle in health.

one day it just clicked that my life experiences through my career were gearing me up to something I would really enjoy and love so then Serenity Hue was Born with zero waste clean vegan natural beauty products. This beauty line represents what my value represent.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

The road to my business was a hard one from having £20 to get to work and back a week to creating my own brand. there were times I cried wanted to give up and my bank balance was zero. how did I get around this literally going for walks in nature, sitting in a room thinking, meditating and looking for help avenues online.

I overcame the challenges by being positive looking for loops holes putting in the hard work always learning on the job always pushing my self-looking for times instead of sitting there watching a movies putting in hours to learn from home. I did it all myself which is a big accomplishment for me because I had a lot of people who told me it’s not going to work but I’m still here so believing your self is very important.

I feel like my great imagination sets me apart.

I am very proud that I put everything together myself, I’m excited about people discovering my brand and where my brand is going business wise. I had some great strengths and a lot of learning into areas I have never dealt with before it wasn’t easy but my hard work dedication and believing in my dream is how I overcame those challenge’s.
lessons I learned along the way were keep working to promote your brand always have a contract in place never change even and always be kind to people you work with. Having a work life balance is also really important as a mother I have learnt to balance them but it did take some time, as sometimes I was over working and other times, I neglected my work. I always gave my children 100% as I’m self-employed I would catch up with work when they were in bed.

I started my brand off with £20 and the idea with a business plan that I wrote up myself. if I could do it so, can you. If you have nothing but an idea it’s a great place to start.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

well as your in Wales we would go Cardiff castle because we are the land of the castle where we have over 600 castles ever recorded, more than 400 castles in Wales are still standing or in ruins, so wherever you go on holiday in Wales you won’t be too far from a historic site. If you don’t have time to visit every single one, we would have to visit Cardiff castle, then get brunch in Cardiff Bay. Which has the hustle and bustle restaurants, bars, boat rides, walks along the river where you can witness a breath-taking view of the sunset, even at cinema and bowling venues the view is memorising.

Fantastic array of restaurants along the strip of city roads from Lebanese Pakistani, Indian, afghani and Turkish foods, as well as desserts. Not to forget the Shisha bars. Just take your pick!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

My mother inspired my career by showing me how important it is for a women to create her own income be independent and really run with any project’s I had, she always give me a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on whenever I needed. Having a strong, driven, multi-talented woman in my surroundings has shaped me in so many ways, and I am so grateful, I have learnt a lot from her to be patient to be driven to muti task and to be kind.

My children gave me that emotional support through out my journey kept me smiling as the journey could come times get lonely where I would go weeks with my head in a book.

Ataf from Kilsby and Williams really helped me out and pushed me to keep going and not give up, look for avenues where I could get help which I’m really grateful for all the advice and help he has given me couldn’t do it without him, truly blessed to have someone like him on my team.
