We had the good fortune of connecting with sept and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi sept, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because I got tired of having to conform to what is societally acceptable. Everything from the way that I talk, my behaviors, my interests, the way that I dress has to be adjusted when in a conventional workplace setting and that was something that NEVER sat right with me. Don’t get me wrong I’m good at turning it off and on to get a check but I’m tired of being somebody that I’m not for the satisfaction of others or their pockets & I’m not the type to do too much to get my bag…. anymore lol. I really wanted to start showcasing exactly who I am, speaking on controversial topics, and making music from the female perspective that I really want to listen to and feel we NEED in female rap. I stand for my morals and I stand on them too; I wanted to make music to inspire little girls to think for themselves, get they OWN bread and have fun while doing it. I wanted to show myself what it means to be sept, forever sept in my ways. I got tired of trading my happiness and time for steady income and decided I gotta make a change and chase my dreams! The day I decided that it’s been like premonition, everything that’s happening I already saw in my dreams and its amazing. So please for your sake, chase your dreams! As cliché as it may sound it’s really true. Know yourself and know what you can do. There. are no limitations, if you can dream it you can achieve it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The main thing that I feel septs me apart from others is my unique ability to talk sh!t about topics while still carrying a positive overall message. I got to where I’m at today by consistently writing and working to perfect my craft with multiple producers, engineers and other artists. I was connected to Purified MGMT which helped accelerate the process and get me in the right spaces so that I can learn and grow accordingly. Even though they helped me to connect the dots it has still been a pretty tough journey for me personally. Going against the grain and talking about things that aren’t “cool” while trying to make them sound good or vibe right with modern day music is a challenge for me sometimes. But every single day I strive to become a better version of myself so nothing ever really gets me down. I listen to ALL advice from my mentors in my corner, other artists, and fans to better strategize the direction I should take. Throughout this process I have learned that there is no right way to do anything and there is no one-way. I have to remain open to the constant changes that come with the music industry and open to constructive criticism to help me become the best version of myself. I just want the world to know that even though I might have a strong opinion on something or even say something that might be against what you may do or what you stand for I am NOT judging you. I am NOT perfect. I have never been perfect. I never said that I will be perfect. The point behind my message is to provide others with the ability to hear something good for the soul coming from a damaged one itself. My name sept, pronounced set, is French for the number seven and it’s that because ya girl defo carries 7 different versions of herself and I plan to show them all through my music. 7 is also a biblical number often connected with intuition, wisdom, growing self-awareness, spiritual revelations, and big shifts that can have a positive impact on your life which is everything I plan to embody in my music… 4L. I been through a lot of sh!t in my life and on my darkest days I dealt with everything alone, music and God was all I had. So now music and God is what I have and I plan to make every song with him in mind butttt in a way us youngins can stand to hear it! He knows I gone talk my sh!t but at the end of the day its the message thats gone hit!!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my bestie was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the bessstttt time it would be a jampacked week let’s just say that! Every day we would forsure go connect with nature maybe a hike, yoga on the beach, a park IDK. Follow it by eating at unique places every single day because I lovvve to switch it up! Things like sushi, Thai food, Roscoes chicken and waffles, birria tacos, really whatever we feel up to getting at that time and that’s close to us! Even though I like to do a lot of things I’m kind of more of a go with the wind kind of gal and I hate to do stuff that I don’t wanna do when I don’t wanna do it. So maybe we’d make a list of all the things we want to get done and randomize it depending on what our mood was at that moment! For me, the most fun or interesting places to go are definitely art museums of any kind. Whether it be music, artwork or movies on display, sign me uppp I wanna see! I also love to do fun things with a crowd, something like the Black Flea Market in LA or anything relatable, going out dancing where the music is HOT, pulling up to one of the homie sessions or any networking events with GOOD energy mfs. Let’s just say if my best friend is visiting the area for a week we’re going to be getting into a lotttttt of stuff, too much to tell!!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
