We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Jablon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sean, how do you think about risk?
I enjoy the uncertainty of (calculated) risks. Firstly, I believe that the word “risk” can often have too much of a negative connotation associated with it. However, in the risks I take, I believe there is also an opportunity. By taking many calculated risks, in which I weigh many options and plausible outcomes to a situation beforehand, I have been fortunate enough to experience many amazing things so far in my life, and to have grown personally as well. Whether that be flying alone across the United States to meet online friends for the first time in person, or driving a stick shift car for the first time in Normandy, France, there was always something to take away from these experiences that came from my courage of taking these risks. I want to clarify in writing this, that there are certain risks that can result in being almost always negative as an outcome, and I do not advise those. However, defining something as “calculated” in a general case is subjective. My risk tolerance may be much higher or much lower than yours, and one’s definition of “calculated” could be a one-second glance, or months of preparation – it depends on you and your comfort. The bottom line is, regardless of your risk tolerance, take that risk. Where there is a risk, there is an opportunity, and I can almost guarantee that even if something does not go as you expect it to, you will learn and grow from it, and be proud that you have done so. With that being said, I certainly look forward to the many future risks I may take and how the path of my life will shift in the future as a result.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Even though I am no master photographer with world-renowned gear and worldwide credibility, I do believe that my photos are often capable of capturing the full picture (no pun intended) of a scene. Most of my photos are spur-of-the-moment shots that I catch walking by a place in a city or a part of nature catching my eye. I love having this spontaneity in my photos as it goes to show that just a simple moment in life can turn out to be so detailed and potentially breathtaking. It definitely took a learning curve over many years for me to improve the candid shots I have taken, as well as more composed images. There is always room for improvement, but it always feels great to look back at the difference between my images when I started and my work today.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are certainly enough people I can think of to fill this page who have helped me in some way in life so that I could get to where I am today. However, above all, I must dedicate my shoutout to my parents: Michael & Laura. For as long as I can remember, they have always taught me to be an independent person, take risks, and truly to live the life I desire without reservations. Along with that, they have always been so supportive, giving me a great upbringing that I do not take for granted and in that upbringing, allowing me to visit so many beautiful places and experience so many unique things so far in life. As a write this, I am gratefully traveling with them along the coast of Alaska as we share our love for nature, new experiences, and travel. Mom and Dad, thank you for everything, I truly would not be who I am today without your love and support. – Love, Sean
