We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Stephens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The freedom of entrepreneurship is of paramount importance to me. I currently own and operate three businesses, with Liquid Blue being at the forefront. I wanted to travel extensively, and performing in a live band offered that possibility. I also wanted to be involved in an industry with a positive social impact. Most of all, I wanted to do something I enjoy. Managing a band is, for the most part, fun! I don’t perform very often anymore, but performing rarely feels like work, as any artist will tell you. I have put in 50 to 70 hours per week into my businesses for most of my life. But since I enjoy doing this, I hesitate to call it “work.” When you love your occupation, you don’t need as much recreational time. I don’t have to flip the switch between work and play. For the most part, it’s almost all play for me.

Liquid Blue is a proud member of 1% for the Planet, a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual memberships and everyday actions. We donate one percent of our gross annual sales to support environmental non-profits. Through our partnership with Carbonfund, Liquid Blue strives to be a carbon-neutral business. Our donations are intended to offset our carbon footprint, which is high due to our extensive travel. On a side note: My new book, Rolling Thunder: The Golden Age, of Roller Derby & the Rise and Fall of the L.A. T-Birds is now an Amazon bestseller!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you love an urban lifestyle and want to be near the ocean, Ocean Beach San Diego is the place to be. For grocery shopping, don’t miss the legendary People’s Organic Food Market. It was one of the first health food stores in the United States and has expanded into one of the biggest and best in all of San Diego. If you are a connoisseur of herbs and medicinal products, visit In Harmony Herbs and Spices in downtown Ocean Beach. This charming herb store has been a fixture in his beachside community for decades. If you’re a coffee snob and want only the very best organic java, don’t miss The Coffee Method on Niagara Ave. for a delicious meal and knew the beach try the Little Lion Café on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. They serve authentic Belgian breakfast and lunch in a cozy atmosphere.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
No individual or company achieves greatness without the help of others. With her company Green Entertainment USA, Nikki Green has been a long-term business associate of Liquid Blue and very instrumental in our success. Michael Vangerov, with Vantastic Sound, has also been a long-term business associate whose work has been instrumental in the success of Liquid Blue. More recently, we have become affiliated with Green Light Booking. Sally Johnson and her team have helped take Liquid Blue to the next level!
