Meet Scott Robertson | Story-Based Brand Messaging Consultant & Bass Player

We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Robertson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Every entrepreneur faces this question in one form or another. And while some will say “never give up,” there are always economic realities (aka not making enough money from the business) that must be considered. For me, I started with a simple phrase that I still sometimes repeat to myself. I say, “I will do this as well as I can for as long as I can. Thankfully, for me, that’s been 13 years. It’s tough to do the work and also have to wrangle up the business so I have accounts with work to do. But I wouldn’t do anything else – I really love helping entrepreneurs who struggle with marketing/PR and I think in my small way, I’m fighting the good fight for the marketing profession’s soul.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
When business owners and entrepreneurs struggle with bad, boring and ineffective marketing, I come in and fix it using Premier StoryBrand™ Messaging and PR/Content Marketing. I’m not a big fan of what passes for marketing these days and almost every new business meeting I have begins with 10-15 minutes of the prospective client telling me how their last marketing agency disappointed them. That’s not right and that shouldn’t be happening.
What sets me apart is clarity and empathy and I bring both to my clients’ marketing. Most marketing is tech-driven automated soulless garbage that gets caught in spam filter nets as marketers try to push people down their funnel so they can “convert” these targets (which sounds religious and militaristic at the same time) to make money. There is a better way.
People whether buying things for their personal lives (B2C) or in the business world (B2B) are most fundamentally interested in themselves and their hero story. We simply need to pick the right words and invite them into that story. When you approach marketing this way, you are exhibiting empathy and you can communicate with great clarity about their problem. That’s what we do using the StoryBrand SB7 framework.
I’ve been sending messages from one side of the tin can with string to the other for more than 30+ years and there is nothing easy about it because you’re dealing with humans and that always introduces the element of chance! But it also makes things very interesting and fun!
I hope my story is about being in service to others. I think a life absent of that isn’t worth very much. I am proud to have helped so many companies clarify their messages, stories and succeed. I just love showing business owners and entrepreneurs a better way to do marketing that isn’t so invasive, annoying or sleazy. We should be better than that.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Even though I currently live in Phoenix, I know SoCal very well because I lived in Orange County for 25+ years. I like showing people Disneyland and many of my trips there have been entertaining out-of-town guests. After that I would say a tour of Los Angeles should be on the itinerary because you have to see the Observatory, the Chinese Theater, La Brea tar pits, the Santa Monica Pier, etc.
I love to eat and drink at some of the places my bands used to play including Hurricanes (Huntington Beach), Goodys Tavern (San Clemente), Our Place (Lake Forest), Silky Sullivans (Fountain Valley) and some of those cool rooms on the Sunset Strip including The Roxy, The Whiskey, The Viper Room and The Troubadour It was amazing standing on those stages knowing who stood there before me.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well, first and foremost, there’s my wife of 31 years Carey and my kids Zac (24) and Hallie (21). Professionally, I’ve had many mentors in my journey including Steve Smith, Smith PR, David Copithorne, Copithorne & Bellows/Porter Novelli, and most recently Donald Miller, author of many best-selling business books like Building a StoryBrand.
