We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Mondet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It’s a construct that’s been building within me for a long time through love for fine aesthetics, close connection, and delicious foods. I was always a wanderer, a hippie at heart, one who loved to escape city life at every chance and breathe in nature’s beauty while enjoying good company & great food. The idea to combine these elements and share them with others really sparked a passion in me, so I started offering unique and intimate picnic experiences with a bohemian ambiance inspired by travel and faraway places. With so many wonderful outdoor spaces to explore, from the well-known to those hidden and tucked away, San Diego was a perfect fit for the launch of Picnic by Nature.
Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Starting a new business on your own is notoriously rocky, even more so when you’re in unfamiliar territory. It also has a great potency for teaching many lessons in a very short amount of time. I knew I wanted to create something that allows people to experience nature in a seamless way with great quality, comfort, and pleasing aesthetics. Working through the ups and downs of a new venture is something I’ve always appreciated and still do. Finding my own way and seeing my visions come to life brings a reward of its own kind, worth every hardship along the journey. Even after so many sessions, seeing the smiles on my customers’ faces and joy in their eyes is absolutely priceless. Picnic by nature specializes in creating picture-perfect picnics with indulgent grazing platters. We give people an opportunity to enjoy the quality time together with friends, colleagues, and loved ones. It’s a special way to relax and connect with each other while getting away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life. The choice to enjoy a moment of beautiful ambiance and closeness with nature creates a certain kind of bliss, and we want our customers to be able to slow down, unwind, and be present with one another. Our authentic design pieces are collected from all over the world to create a unique scenery for guests, and we serve grazing platters using only delectable, high-quality ingredients. We take care of all the coordination & logistical efforts, including setup and breakdown, so our customers can focus on relaxing in style and creating magical, long-lasting memories.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a hard question for me 🙂 I have lived in San Diego for just over 1.5 years now but I had to isolate at home for most of the time. I still explore a lot myself but I’m sure I have only scratched the surface of what this amazing City has to offer. What I already learned is that Little Italy has amazing restaurants and whenever I’m craving a real Napoli pizza I would definitely go to Isola. For a breathtaking sunset at the beach Windansea is my go-to place. I love creative and artsy places like Liberty Station and I do always appreciate a visit to Balboa Park just to relax and stroll around.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of my goals when I decided to start my own business was to be able to work with amazing humans who inspire me and turn into friends outside the business. I’m proud and most grateful for the fact that I can say that this goal is accomplished. My shoutout goes to all the amazing friends I work with. Starting with Bruna from Grazing Box SD and Nicole from Board & Brie who always take care of our delicious grazing boards. Charie Juaneza and Blair Kirby for the amazing work they do with their cameras. Gustavo from the Beach Bro’s for always setting up bonfires for my clients and constantly checking in and reaching me a helping hand. Ash from Terracotta Studio for the beautiful flower arrangements for our picnic tables. I’m also blessed to have amazing yoga teachers like Dominick Cole, Nazli Takesh and Charie who create a beautiful space for our Clients to relax and slow down before the picnic starts. The last shout out goes to my husband of course who always saves me when I forgot the picnic blanket at home. I appreciate all of them so much and couldn’t do this without them.
