We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Mae Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah Mae, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Early on in my career as a makeup artist, it was brought to my attention that I was just one of many people that do beautiful makeup. So aside from flawless soft glam, what could I bring to the table that brought true value to my clients? My desire to serve. Having a strong background in the customer service field, I know the value of good communication, prompt response times and being a helpful asset to each of my clients. I care about these girls and it’s important that they can feel that. My mission became that from the very first inquiry request, I wanted to make a personal connection, make myself easy to get ahold of and always respond to clients promptly and cheerfully. I know that my attitude, my energy and my quality of service all have the power to make or break a bride’s big day. I became determined that everyone that sits in my chair would feel not only beautiful, but seen and heard, knowing I did all in my power to make their planning process and morning of a complete success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My specialty is natural to soft glam makeup. Ironically my husband doesn’t like makeup so it became important to me to master creating a flawless enhanced look while still staying true to our own unique beauty. Because of that, I have found I attract a lot of like minded clients, makeup minimalists, that are afraid of not feeling like themselves and want their husbands to still recognize them. However, early on in this career, I came to realize “natural” or “soft glam” makeup are words very much open to interpretation. Ha! My version of natural and my clients version of natural were sometimes verrry different. I’ve learned to communicate with each of my clients to really hone into their personal taste and an intensity that makes them feel their beautiful best!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the most charming little college town of downtown Redlands. Redlands prides itself on supporting small businesses so there is much to do and see right in downtown! We’d have to start off at the iconic Orange Street Alley where art is splashed all over the walls and hundreds of colorful umbrellas hang from high above. While we’re there, we’d stop by the charming Copehouse to share some sweet and sour brussel sprouts and a round of Penicillins. We’d then walk one block over to The State for dinner. Their Poutine is a delicious starter round followed by one of their amazing burgers or their vegan lentil pasta with spicy tomato sauce, roasted tomatoes & ground impossible meat topped with basil. The State also offers some of the best cocktails and select, limited whiskey collections around so we’d sit down and get comfortable to embrace the most diverse whiskey tasting of our dreams. Now we’d be on our way to The District or The Vault for some live music and dancing. At the end of the night, we’d finish off the night by indulging in handmade, nitro freezed, strawberry balsamic ice cream from A la Minute. Yes! If you’re coming to Redlands, be sure to come with an empty stomach because there’s so much to experience!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank my sister, Hannah from Hannah Maisel Photography. She believed in me and encouraged me to start my career as a makeup artist when I struggled with my fear of failing and lacked the confidence to pursue my dream. Even in my amateur years, she supported me by volunteering her face for my practice sessions and cheered me on. Thank you Hannah! I don’t know if I would have ever taken the leap of faith without you.
