We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Mazzeo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
I read The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy a few years back, before starting my own practice and evolving into the more present and authentic person I am now, and I think it had a huge impact on getting me here. The book focuses on making all the small decisions the right way, which collectively add up to make huge impacts in your life. The analogy that stuck with me was that of a jet leaving the San Diego airport headed for NYC, but if it is off course by only 1-2 degrees, it could end up in Toronto – small adjustments have huge impacts in the long run. This framework has been tremendous for me, both in remembering and encouraging me to not take the easy way and make the right decisions moment to moment, day to day, but also it gives me a sense of freedom knowing that so long as, collectively, I’m making responsible decisions, one cheat day or skipped workout isn’t the end of the world.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Better APC, we believe that we’re better together. We understand that chasing your dreams can be scary. That’s why we’re affordable and approachable when you need a trusted ally most. But make no mistake— while we have the reputation of being relatable (and even fun), we’ll also fight for you. Like our friend Bertie the hedgehog, we’re small but mighty, ready to jump into action for you, quills out, whenever the situation calls for it. We believe that you deserve better than cookie cutter services. We’ll never try to sell you something you don’t need. You’re a person, not a payday. We leverage active listening, powerful digital tools, and teamwork to deliver customized legal solutions to you. Oh, and our consultations and workshops are free. Because if you know better, you can be better. We believe in being better than yesterday. For us, that doesn’t just mean being better lawyers every day, it also means being better humans. We volunteer within our community, practice self care, and encourage each other’s personal development. And we’ll also encourage you. Need a recommendation for a local cause to support? Single-use plastic alternative? Meditation app? It’s all fair game when you work with us. We’re not in this to be the biggest or most well-known law firm. We’re here to make a meaningful impact. To help you turn your passion project into your passion purpose. To us, there’s nothing better than that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d rent them an electric assist bike so we can get in some bike rides up to Cabrillo and up the Silver Strand. Stopping at the views along the way. Of course, some beach time in sunny San Diego. Maybe a hike or two (Potato Chip Rock, etc.). Try for some kayak or paddleboard or boat rental time on the water. Definitely checking out spots like Kindred, Born & Raised, Fort Oak. This is, assuming, we aren’t in lockdown, of course.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe she has already interacted with you guys, but I would not have started a law firm if it were not for Emily Wilkinson.
