We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruth-Ann Thorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruth-Ann, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I never really liked working for anyone. I always knew I would be an entrepreneur. The main reason is because most people don’t like to get things completely executed in a timely manner. I think entrepreneur speak their own language which is… We get it done!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I moved out of the house when I was 14. Being part Native American and from an impoverished background there aren’t a lot of opportunities unless you have money to go to college. I started working in an art gallery when I was 22 and knew it was what I wanted to devote my life to. I bootstrapped myself and started my first gallery in 1998. Over the past 26 years I grew my Galleries to a total of seven in major locations. It has not been easy but it has been joyous!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love New York! There’s so many cool places to go and people to meet from all over the world! We would be ok anywhere in the big apple because it’s hard to get a bad meal anywhere in New York you can stop at cafés and eateries pretty much anywhere. I like to have a martini in Manhattan after I go to the museums and stroll through Central Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this to my mom Gloria Lee the artist entrepreneur who showed me the way!
