We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Masters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I am a parent to 2 amazing special needs children & 2 amazing bonus children. To say life is hectic is an understatement. I think the most important thing I’ve shown my children is that when you put your mind, heart & soul into something you’re truly passionate about, your dreams will come true. I’ve also shown them the importance of hard work & dedication & to chase your dreams – even if it sometimes means sacrificing sleep.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Spooky House Bakery is a small at-home based bakery in Lakeside that specializes in cakes, cupcakes & cookies! Our most famous item is our VEGAN & GLUTEN FREE sugar cookies! We freshly bake each batch & decorate them with love & care. We pride ourselves in freshness & high quality ingredients.
I started my bakery in October of 2019 & enrolled in a pastry school in November of 2019 (graduating during Covid in January of 2021). Covid hit in March of 2020 & effectively halted my goals of opening a brick and mortar by our second birthday in 2021. Instead, I have found by us attending local venues such as the Scripps Ranch Farmers Market on Thursdays & the La Mesa Farmers Market on Fridays – as well as various events throughout the month – puts me one step closer to that brick & mortar. While this is not where I envisioned my business to be, I know it’s where I NEED to be.
We also are very involved in the LGBT community & every month we raise money for a selected LGBT charity by selling heart shaped sugar cookies in pride flag designs. In 2 months, we have raised $164 for 2 separate charities.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I enjoy staying off the beaten trail no matter where life takes me; I feel like it brings me closer to what living in a particular area is like versus staying in tourist-y areas. When my family comes to visit from the east coast, I try to take them to the little mom & pop shops – like Frost Me! Cupcakes down in seaport village – or to hiking trails & historic monuments like rancho penaquitos hiking trail or mount soledad.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without the love & support of my friends, family, kids & my partners, I would not be where I’m at today – because of them I know I can do anything.
